    City Stars dig into archives for stats

    Promoted Nairobi City Stars is at the collection point for all its past statistics.

    According to team coordinator Samson Otieno and CEO Patrick Korir, stats gives a rare view that’s important as the team forges forward.

    “Reasons for collecting stats are varied but in our case at City Stars we want to capture trends by looking at past seasons,”

    “This will help in identifying important events as we look ahead to upcoming seasons.” said Samson

    For the CEO, numbers will help identify,among others, the legends of the clubs.

    “I have always been curious about numbers and hence the City Stars retrospective numbers search. For example who is the team’s all-time top scorer, assist provider? Which are the bogey teams? Who played the most games across the top leagues and second tier?

    “Assembling the stats will give us an analytic start point as a view backwards guides us going forward. It will also help identify the true legends of the club.” said Korir

    In relating to the mission at hand, Samson revisited the 2018/19 season where the team was fighting relegation.

    “In that season the team had only one win and just 11 points after 20 rounds of play with just one clean sheet and deep in relegation danger. It guided us in mid season transfer signings to a point the team survived the chop,”

    “Once we have the stats we will share them with our followers to help understand the team better.” added Samson

    City Stars recent elevation back to the top tier ended four seasons in second tier cold.

  • Promotion excites Coach Sanjin

    Promotion excites Coach Sanjin

    On the final day of April 2020, the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) announced the promotion of Nairobi City Stars to the top tier Kenyan Premier League (KPL).

    In their official communication later, FKF confirmed the promotion following their cancellation of all league’s countrywide due to the ongoing Corona virus pandemic that ended football activities in mid-March and has complicated return of games in the near future.

    By the time of stagnation of the Betika National Super League (NSL), City Stars topped the 19-team log with 64 points with a ten-point buffer over Bidco United who are also promoted to the top league for the first time ever.

    The news was icing to head coach Sanjin Alagic cake that he started baking from the beginning of the season in September 2019.

    Speaking from his base in Sarajevo in Bosnia and Herzegovina where he recoiled from the start of the Covid-19 partial lock down, the deliriously happy coach said;

    “I’m very delighted and proud of being Champions of NSL and securing promotion to the KPL, the place where NCS belongs,”

    “First of all I wish to congratulate my players for the amazing job they did throughout the season, they are most deserving for this success!”

    “This achievement was result of hard and dedicated work and it will not be possible without great support of our owner Jonathan (Jackson), CEO Patrick (Korir), coordinator Samson (Otieno), Foundation CEO Mwenesi (Musalia), and my coaching staff, our fans and all people in the Club who believed in us.” he added

    Sanjin arrived at City Stars in the first week of July 2019 for the season. He kicked off with organizing careful recruitment and a seven-week preseason.

    Of the 26 games he took charge off before the league prematurely ended, Sanjin led City Stars to 20 wins, four draws and two losses. That included an incredible 13-game unbeaten away run.

    City Stars players turn to community caregivers

    On Wednesday and Easter Friday, Nairobi City Stars players put behind their footballers’ tags to serve several communities across the City of Nairobi.

    Led by skipper Noah Abich, his assistant Calvin Masawa and field captain Anthony Kimani, a long list of active players joined hands with team owner and sponsor Jonathan Jackson Foundation (JJF) to lend a hand in distributing food hampers to the vulnerable families in Kibera and Deep Sea in Parklands.

    This is in the wake of the Corona Virus pandemic that, from mid-March 2020, disrupted operational norms not only in the country but across the globe.

    JJF joined hands with Team Pankaj who on their own accord rallied major corporates to contribute food stuff and other household items towards the noble idea.

    Speaking on the same, Jonathan Jackson, the chair of both City Stars and JFF said;

    “With a reset from normal life there are communities that are adversely affected by the Corona Virus pandemic. A work-from-home call by the Government that has been heeded by many as a way to contain the spread of virus has left many a common person without a livelihood. These are part of reasons we are joining hands with the likes of Team Pankaj and the helpful hands of City Stars players to distribute foodstuffs to the most hit communities. We have done this across the week and hope to continue in days to come.” he added

    Commenting on the same, Abich who led the team in distributing the hampers on Wednesday across different centers said;

    “This is a worthy cause and when we were informed there was work to be done, we quickly availed ourselves for that purpose,”

    “The Corona Virus has affected many families as home providers are now temporarily jobless due to a shutdown to many earning opportunities. We will continue to lend a hand to JJF as I thank all those that have come forward to donate and put a smile to these families.”

    Masawa who led another team back to Kibera and Deep Sea on Friday said;

    “With our league on hold due to Corona Virus we have now turned our focus to serve the community and are working hand in hand with JFF to see to it that we put a smile to the most affected families across different communities.”

    A final comment came from the team CEO Korir who said; “I must thank Team Pankaj for minding the society during this hard times. Their generosity is simply second to none. As they provide the goodies, my team and I, and in conjunction with JJF, will always be at hand to deliver the same to the most deserving in the communities.”

    Other than the distribution, the City Stars team has also been actively involved in packaging of the hampers at Team Pankaj’s Pack House in Westlands.

    Midfielders Charles Otieno, Elvis Ojiambo and Oliver Maloba, keeper Ronny Kagunzi, left back Wesley Onguso and striker Ezekiel Odera, team trainer Arthur Museve and CEO Korir were part of the Wednesday team.

    Right back Kevin Okumu, defender Edwin Buliba and winger David Gateri joined in on Friday as Maloba, Kimani and Odera took a break. More players will be activated in days to come.

    Corona Virus: Home training program for players

    Following the recent Corona Virus breakdown that brought an end to all normal programming, Nairobi City Stars technical department has crafted a ‘work from home’ schedule for all players during the lock down period.

    The program will run through the last week of March to the end of April 2020 assuming there will be no changes to the current state of affairs with the pandemic.

    “Considering no public grounds and facilities are open as a result of a directive from the Ministry of Health, there is no choice but to have players train from home just to stay fit,” said club CEO Patrick Korir

    In relaying the program to the players, head Coach Sanjin Alagic has reminded players to observe social distancing as muted by the Ministry of Health as one of the ways to avoid the spread of the virus.

    “All training work to be done from home or in an open area away from other people. Do not train in public areas including Gyms.” he called out.

    The second tier Betika National Super League (NSL) took an indefinite break due to the Corona Virus after round 28 of matches on the weekend ending Sunday 15 March 2020.

    After that set of games City Stars led the 19-team pack with 64-points, with a ten-point cushion.

    Coronavirus: Coach Sanjin granted leave

    Following the Coronavirus outbreak that led to the indefinite stop of the Betika super League from Monday 15 March 2020, Nairobi City Stars has granted head coach Sanjin Alagic leave to return to his home country Bosnia.

    The coach jetted out on the evening of Thursday 19 March to join his family while the pandemic continues to be monitored globally.

    “We fully understand the situation and during this time all sporting activities are at a halt. After discussions with the chair Mr. Jonathan Jackson it was only fair that we grant the coach leave to allow him join his family in Bosnia,” said club CEO Patrick Korir

    “He will return once everything normalizes. In the meantime we have asked him to come up with a program that players can follow for the next one month while they continue to operate from home.” added Korir

    Commenting on the scenario at hand, Sanjin said;

    “When it’s uncertain you can’t plan. It’s best I go stay with my family during this period then at the right time I will return to complete the project. My family needs me at this time.” he said

    Sanjin’s last assignment was to oversee a tough game against promotion chasers Nairobi Stima on Saturday at Camp Toyoyo in Jericho. City Stars won it 1-0 to open up a ten-point gap over the chasing pack.

    Once in Bosnia Sanjin is expected to observe a 14-day quarantine period before he can freely mingle with his family.
