Odera, Kamau in for KCB clash

The entry of striker Ezekiel Odera and winger John Kamau are the two changes made as Nairobi City Stars look ahead to their next FKF Premier League game against KCB in Kasarani on Saturday 21 May 2022 starting 3 pm.

Odera, City Stars’ current top scorer with eight goals, missed the previous Tusker game due to accumulated yellow card suspension and is back to face his former employer KCB, while Kamau makes a comeback after sitting out the last two games against Wazito and Tusker.

The two take up the places of Augustine Kuta and Charles Otieno who are rested for the tie, while the other 18 players retain their slots.

Compared to the squad that faced KCB in the first leg in mid-December 2021, and lost 1-0 in Ruaraka, changes made are seven.

Keeper Stephen Njunge, stopper Lennox Ogutu, midfielders Oliver Maloba, Charles Otieno, Rowland Makati, forwards Davis Agesa, and Vincent Otieno Okoth, are all out.

They have been replaced by keeper Elvis Ochoro, defenders Kevin Okumu, Salim Abdallah, Kenedy Onyango, and Wycliffe Otieno, and midfielder Mohammed Bajaber.

Striker Nicholas Kipkirui, who was named to face KCB in December, only to be replaced on the morning of the game by John Kamau due to illness, is the final change.

Muki, Chumsy return for Tusker duel

Anthony Muki Kimani and Kevin Chumsy Okumu are the only two changes made as Nairobi City Stars shape up for a showdown with FKF Premier League champions Tusker in Ruaraka on Sunday 15 May 2022 starting 3 pm.

The duo missed the last two games against Kenya Police and Wazito FC, and are now back in place of Ezekiel Odera who is suspended due to (five) yellow card accumulation, and Davis Agesa who picked an injury in training.

While Muki missed the last two games due to a red card suffered against Sofapaka, Chumsy had been out with an injury.

Save for the two inclusions, the other 18 players, including Mohammed Bajaber who was named to the lineup for the first time against Wazito FC, maintained their positions.

Amboko talks up record-equalling 14th Premier League win

For only a second time, and for the first time since the 2005/6  season, Nairobi City Stars has registered 14 season wins in the premier league.

The rare fete was matched on Monday 9 May 2022 following a 1-0 win over Wazito in Kasarani. Striker Ezekiel Odera scored the lone goal via a penalty in the second half to confirm a season double over Wazito.

    Long-serving John Amboko, a greenhorn when City Stars – then known as World Hope – registered 14 wins in its first top-flight season back in the 2005/6 season, now talks up the latest development;

“We have been working hard as a team and we are still working hard until our last game,” said the current assistant coach.

“First, getting six points from Wazito this season is such a great feeling as we had been losing to them each time we met in the previous seasons,”

“The win did put us (back) in contention of the league again and these last five matches will determine a lot as we stand a very good chance to break that record,”

“About us equaling the 2005-2006 season wins, especially as a coach, after a long time, it’s such a great feeling and it’s pretty special.” added Amboko

City Stars will attempt a record win number 15 in the top flight on Sunday 15 May 2022 in Ruaraka when they host champions Tusker FC from 3 pm.

The team managed 12 premier league wins last season (2020/21) after one other win over Zoo FC was omitted following the team’s expulsion from the league.

Nonetheless, the 12 wins were one more than the eleven registered in the 2006/7, 2008, and 2009 seasons which were the only other seasons the team posted double-digit wins. For each season from 2010 to 2016, City Stars had less than ten wins.

Odera moves up in all-time scorers list

Striker Ezekiel Odera Omulo scored the winning goal as Nairobi City Stars hit hosts Wazito FC 1-0 on Monday 9 May 2022 in a 29th round FKF Premier League match at Kasarani Annex.

Odera’s goal, his eighth of the season, came via the penalty spot after Timothy Ouma was fouled in the box by a Wazito defender.

The goal, the first penalty scored by City Stars this season, improved Odera’s goals in City Stars colors, in all competitions, to 32 to tie Gambian hitman Ebrima Sanneh.

The two now sit third on the all-time scorers’ list behind legends Justus Basweti and Francis Thairu.

In early April, Odera scored once as City Stars beat Bandari 2-1 in Ruaraka to level up with another club legend Arthur Museve on 31 all-time goals.

“The most important part about the Monday’s goal is that it gave us a much-needed win in the league. The team had gone two games without a scoring a goal and I am glad to have ended that run,” said Odera

With eight goals, Odera now matches the top scorers in the last two seasons; Peter Opiyo (2020/21) and Ebrima Sanneh (2019/20).

Odera leads the scorer’s pack at Simba wa Nairobi, and has three goals on Timothy Ouma and Anthony Kimani who have both scored five goals each.

An Ezekiel Odera penalty in the 58th minute, earned after Timothy Babu Ouma was bumped off the ball by stopper Dennis Nandwa, was the difference as Nairobi City Stars visited Wazito at Kasarani Annex on Monday 9 May 2022 for a 29th round FKF Premier League clash.

Odera’s goal, the eighth of the season and his 32nd in all competition for City Stars, earned City Stars a record-tying 14th premier league win, matching a rare fete only achieved in the 2005/6 premier league season.

Simba wa Nairobi is now on 49 points up a place to fifth place, as Wazito remained 17th in the 18-team log with 22 points after Monday proceedings.

Inside the first ten minutes of the game, City Stars had a freekick flashed into the box by Herit Mungai that yielded a fruitless corner as Nicholas Kipkirui, in his first start since mid-March, had a header off a Calvin Masawa cross fly wide, and soon after Davies Agesa arrived in the box with speed only to fire wide.

In between Kipkirui and Agesa’s efforts, Wazito’s Curtis Wekesa landed in the City Stars box only to serve a feeble cross that was checked.

Within the next dozen minutes, Wazito had the better chances to grab an opener but a Tyson Otieno shot ended up with keeper Jacob Osano as Wekesa followed that up with an unaccounted freekick from the edge of the box.

As the clock ticked 25 minutes, Odera forced a corner that Mungai fired straight at Wazito keeper Zamu Adisa and moments later, a Timothy Ouma freekick earned after Kipkirui was clipped, flew high and wide.

Past the half-hour mark, it is Wazito that had the best of chances but a glorious opportunity that fell to skipper Ellie Asieche in the 40th minute went wide after the first take had been saved by Osano.

Wazito were to waste two corners as City Stars fired wide a freekick just before the breather.

Inside two minutes of the second half, either side fired freekicks wide and in the 54th minute, City Stars went a goal up after Timothy Ouma nodded home an Odera cross only for the ref to rule it out for offside.

Three minutes later, Babu raced into the box to receive a high ball but was checked to earn a penalty that Odera drove home with his left foot two minutes later for Simba wa Nairobi to go 1-0 up.

The goal spurred Wazito to action and within the next six minutes, they forced three corners from defenders Masawa and Wycliffe Otieno, and keeper Osano who dived the right way to stop a point-blank attempt from Wekesa. All corners were wasted.

In the 70th minute, City Stars coach Nicholas Muyoti added firepower to his flanks by bringing on flyer Rodgers Okuse Okumu for Kipkirui and Augustine Kuta for Agesa as Wazito introduced striker Eric Otieno for defensive-mid Fidel Origa.

Three minutes after the changes, Wazito won a freekick at the edge of the box but Osano dove right to keep out a Rooney Onyango take that was destined for the base of the upright for yet another corner that yielded naught.

Three minutes later stopper Kenedy Vidic Onyango pulled a massive save stopping a Rooney drive on the line as Wazito continued to pile more pressure on Simba wa Nairobi.

In the 81st minute, Wazito threw in their final subs bringing on Azizi Okaka and Ezekiel Otieno for Wekesa and Michael Owino, respectively.

Moments later, City Stars opted to defend their lead by pulling out goal scorer Odera for stopper Salim Situ Abdalla as defensive-mid Charles Otieno came on for creative-mid Elvis Noor Ojiambo.

A corner for Wazito, a long-range shot by fresh Charles Otieno, and a massive Osano save for yet another corner for Wazito, were part of the action in the next few minutes.

Right at the death, a speeding Okuse was brought down by keeper Adisa. The center ref issued out a freekick that Babu fired wide.

The game came to an end with a Wazito freekick that Ronney fired straight to the City Stars wall.
