Amboko talks up record-equalling 14th Premier League win

For only a second time, and for the first time since the 2005/6  season, Nairobi City Stars has registered 14 season wins in the premier league.

The rare fete was matched on Monday 9 May 2022 following a 1-0 win over Wazito in Kasarani. Striker Ezekiel Odera scored the lone goal via a penalty in the second half to confirm a season double over Wazito.

Long-serving John Amboko, a greenhorn when City Stars – then known as World Hope – registered 14 wins in its first top-flight season back in the 2005/6 season, now talks up the latest development;

“We have been working hard as a team and we are still working hard until our last game,” said the current assistant coach.

“First, getting six points from Wazito this season is such a great feeling as we had been losing to them each time we met in the previous seasons,”

“The win did put us (back) in contention of the league again and these last five matches will determine a lot as we stand a very good chance to break that record,”

“About us equaling the 2005-2006 season wins, especially as a coach, after a long time, it’s such a great feeling and it’s pretty special.” added Amboko

City Stars will attempt a record win number 15 in the top flight on Sunday 15 May 2022 in Ruaraka when they host champions Tusker FC from 3 pm.

The team managed 12 premier league wins last season (2020/21) after one other win over Zoo FC was omitted following the team’s expulsion from the league.

Nonetheless, the 12 wins were one more than the eleven registered in the 2006/7, 2008, and 2009 seasons which were the only other seasons the team posted double-digit wins. For each season from 2010 to 2016, City Stars had less than ten wins.
