Club statement: Departure of assistant coaches

Nairobi City Stars wishes to announce the departure of first and second assistant coaches John Amboko and Noah Abich who have both left the club to pursue other interests.

Amboko had been in the ranks of City Stars since the year 2003 when the club was known as World Hope, and played on till the year 2017, save for the year 2011 when he was at AFC Leopards, before moving on to become a coach. He holds a CAF ‘B’ and CAF ‘A’ coaching Diplomas.

Abich joined the club in 2019 and went on to skipper City Stars to promotion back to the toplight league the next season after four years out. He later joined the technical bench in the year 2020. He holds CAF ‘C’ coaching Diploma.

“We thank both Amboko and Abich for their dedicated service to Nairobi City Stars over the years. We appreciate their contribution on and off the pitch, and wish them the very best in their future endeavors.”

Amboko talks up record-equalling 14th Premier League win

For only a second time, and for the first time since the 2005/6  season, Nairobi City Stars has registered 14 season wins in the premier league.

The rare fete was matched on Monday 9 May 2022 following a 1-0 win over Wazito in Kasarani. Striker Ezekiel Odera scored the lone goal via a penalty in the second half to confirm a season double over Wazito.

    Long-serving John Amboko, a greenhorn when City Stars – then known as World Hope – registered 14 wins in its first top-flight season back in the 2005/6 season, now talks up the latest development;

“We have been working hard as a team and we are still working hard until our last game,” said the current assistant coach.

“First, getting six points from Wazito this season is such a great feeling as we had been losing to them each time we met in the previous seasons,”

“The win did put us (back) in contention of the league again and these last five matches will determine a lot as we stand a very good chance to break that record,”

“About us equaling the 2005-2006 season wins, especially as a coach, after a long time, it’s such a great feeling and it’s pretty special.” added Amboko

City Stars will attempt a record win number 15 in the top flight on Sunday 15 May 2022 in Ruaraka when they host champions Tusker FC from 3 pm.

The team managed 12 premier league wins last season (2020/21) after one other win over Zoo FC was omitted following the team’s expulsion from the league.

Nonetheless, the 12 wins were one more than the eleven registered in the 2006/7, 2008, and 2009 seasons which were the only other seasons the team posted double-digit wins. For each season from 2010 to 2016, City Stars had less than ten wins.

Amboko on why City Stars is on the rise

Club legend John Amboko has spelled out the reasons why Nairobi City Stars is a shining star this season.

His sentiments come a time when Simba wa Nairobi is second on the 18-team log with 35 points, five off the top, after 19 rounds of play.

The club stalwart says office support, team chemistry, and the leadership of head coach Nicholas Muyoti, all combined, are the determinants for the good show.

“Currently, I can say that this season is one of the best so far based on the performance of the team,” said Amboko

“The team is well motivated and this is brought about by the support being received from the sponsors and management,”

“The chemistry among the players is evident as they have played together for long,”

“Under the leadership of our head coach (Nicholas Muyoti), the entire technical bench is working very hard and approaching each game with the seriousness it deserves.” added the former stopper and team captain

Save for the year 2013 when he turned out for AFC Leopards, Amboko has been in the ranks of Nairobi City Stars from when it was known as World Hope back in 2003 to 2017 as a player.

He turned to coach thereafter and has been part of the clubs’ journey out of the topflight, and back up in 2020.

    Nairobi City Stars promoted

Amboko recently upgraded his coaching badge from CAF ‘C’ to CAF ‘B’ License.

Nairobi City Stars coach John Amboko has come through a four-month coaching course, overseen by Football Federation of Kenya (FKF) instructors, as sanctioned by CAF, to graduate with a ‘B’ license Diploma.

Amboko, at Nairobi City Stars since 2002 to 2017 as a player – save for 2013 when did a season at AFC Leopards-, is one of 25 coaches who received the certificate following the completion of classes that kicked off in mid-September this year in Kasarani.

“I wish to sincerely thank the entire City Stars management for enabling me to attend, complete, and graduate from the just concluded CAF ‘B’ course,” said Amboko

Amboko has steadily been piling up his coaching badges and the latest CAF ‘B’ license is an upscale of his CAF ‘C’ one acquired – alongside Tiellen Oguta – back in October 2019.

“We are elated at his coaching progression. Amboko is a club legend having started his career as a player way back in 2002 before venturing into coaching in 2017. We are proud of his latest achievement and as a team we are very happy to see him grow.” said club CEO

Amboko becomes the third City Stars coach to complete a coaching course this year.

In mid-October, assistant coach Noah Abich and a keeper trainer Zachary Onyango completed a one-month CAF ‘C’ Diploma license course in Kisumu.

  • Nicholas Muyoti joins Nairobi City Stars

Nicholas Muyoti joins Nairobi City Stars

Nairobi City Stars has appointed Nicholas Ndubi Muyoti, 45, as head coach.

Muyoti, a former Kenya captain, capped 17 times for the national team between 2001 and 2004, joins City Stars on a three-year deal.

He will be assisted by club legend John Amboko who handled the club from mid-July 2021 after the exit of Bosnian Sanjin Alagic at the expiry of his contract and two-year tenure.

Muyoti, a former assistant coach at AFC Leopards, and head coach at Oserian, Zetech University, Thika United, and Nzoia Sugar, joins Simba wa Nairobi after three years at Premiership side Kakamega Homeboyz.

“Muyoti is a skill and performance-based coach known for his leadership and good relationship with players from the young to the senior ones,” said club chair Jonathan Jackson

“He became the best fit for Simba wa Nairobi as the club has a balanced squad full of youth and experienced players,”

“I take this opportunity to usher him to Nairobi City Stars.” Added Jonathan

Club CEO Patrick Korir added his voice to Muyoti’s arrival stating:

“We were made aware of his availability at a time when we were looing through a pile of applications from both local and foreign coaches,”

“His recent track record where he made Homeboyz a formidable side in the last three seasons with a top-seven finish in all instances, as well as his great personality, became our attraction point,”

“Most importantly, Muyoti is known for his voluntary service to the community which directly aligns with the strong pillars of the Jonathan Jackson Foundation that manages Nairobi City Stars,”

“It goes to say that in many fronts he suited the Nairobi City Stars family.” added Korir

In taking up the role, Muyoti had this to say:

‘I would like to thank the chair Jonathan for the opportunity and for the confidence he has shown in me to coach Nairobi City Stars,”

“When I left my last workstation, I was to seek an opportunity outside the country but when the possibility to join City Stars came by I had to change my plans,”

“That possibility turned to reality, and it excites me to be part of Simba wa Nairobi, a club full of stability and ambitions. I believe that together, we will achieve the set targets,” said Muyoti

Muyoti has already been introduced to the entire Nairobi City Stars setup from the players to the rest of the technical bench, as well as the entire management including the Foundation.
