Sanjin: City Stars has a great future

Days after falling off 1-0 to champions Gor Mahia, Nairobi City Stars head coach Sanjin Alagic reckons the team has all it takes to be a great team in the near future.

This he considers is brought about by the team’s gradual stride into the premier league years after sitting out the top league.

Thus far, the team has picked 17 points from as many games and currently sits twelfth in the 17-team standings.

Tracing back to the immediate past game against Gor Mahia, this is what the coach had to say;

“I need to congratulate my players for a great performance. We definitely deserved more because we were the better team in that match,”

“Even with a player less, NCS attacked and made pressure on Gor and we had an amazing chance in last minute when Kip (kirui) and Rodgers (Okumu) were alone in front of goal,”

He roped in Tusker into the conversation, a team City Stars drew with 2-2 prior to facing Gor Mahia, after letting go a 2-0 half time lead.

He talked of how conceded goals cost City Stars in those two games;

“It’s disturbing when you see the how unlucky we conceded goals against Gor and Tusker,”

“City Stars has played really good football this season and we deserve to have more points. But the fact is that this team is still growing up through this Premier league matches,”

“I’m sure this team has a great future.” concluded Sanjin

With the first leg of the league over and out, Sanjin can now prepare the team for the second leg starting off with a home game against Sofapaka on Monday 24 May 2021 at Ruaraka.

City Stars falls to champions Gor Mahia

A lone rebound goal by Burkina Faso’s Karim Abdoul handed champions Gor Mahia a 1-0 win over Nairobi City Stars in a round 17 premier league tie at Utalii grounds on Sunday 16 May 2021.

Cliffton Miheso, off the left wing, smacked the crossbar in the 31st minute and the ball generously fell within reach of Karim who guided the ball home for the only goal of the game that turned out the winner.

As early as the fifth minute Kenneth Muguna had tested City Stars keeper Stephen Njunge with a low freekick that Miheso had won off the top of the box. It eventually resulted in a goal kick.

Inside 20 minutes, City Stars field skipper Anthony Muki Kimani had twice gone close to grabbing at least a goal. I the 16th minute he sent a freekick just wide and five minutes later he fired a shot wide.

A minute to the half hour mark Miheso brought in a dangerous cross that weaved just wide of Njunge’s goal. His next attempt two minutes later brought the goal by Karim.

Dented by the goal, City Stars went in search of the leveler and the best of the chances fell on Muki who sent a rebound off a  freekick wide three minutes to the breather.

Five and ten minutes into the restart, Gor dangerman Muguna fired two direct long rangers home only to be denied on both occasions by Njunge.

City Stars were forced into early changes when Oliver Maloba, who had most run in on Gor defense in the first half, exited the scene of play in the 63rd minute. He was replaced by Nicholas Kipkirui who came on to meet his former employers.

The game took a new twist in the 74th minute when City Stars striker Erick Ombija was slapped with a straight red card after a swinging hand in an off the ball incident caught out Gor debutant Frank Odhiambo.

Minutes later, changes saw the introduction of Simba wa Nairobi flyer Rodgers Okuse Okumu and defensive mid Charles Otieno for a tiring Muki and Elvis Ojiambo, respectively.

But just before the changes, Gor missed a glorious chance to double the lead when Ugandan-born Tito Okello sent a header wide at the far post when it was easier to score after being picked out by a switching cross from the left by left back Geoffrey Ochieng.

Not too long after City Stars subs, Gor reacted by onboarding Alpha Onyango for Muguna and Samuel Onyango for Tito.

And City Stars coach Sanjin then threw in striker Ebrima Sanneh for Davis Agesa and Edwin Buliba for Kevin Chumsy Okumu at right back.

There was late drama when, twice, Kipkirui sneaked behind Gor defense to receive through balls but on both occasions was denied by keeper Gad Mathews.

Gor and City Stars were meeting in the top flight for the first time since July 2016, and the win for the champions means City Stars are still in search of their first win over their foes for the tenth year running.

The win sees Gor Mahia step-up to 22 points and move two places up from eighth to sixth from 15 games as City Stars remains on 17 points from as many games.

Due to other results, Simba wa Nairobi now drops down a place to 12th spot. They next host Sofapaka in Nairobi on Monday 24 May 2021.

‘Okuse’ in 20-man squad for Gor Mahia clash

Head coach Sanjin Alagic has confirmed his 20-man squad to face champions Gor Mahia at the Utalii grounds on Sunday 16 May 2021 starting 3pm.

The upcoming tie is the 17th and final first leg clash of of the 2020/21 Kenyan Premier League season.

Flyer Rodgers Okuse Okumu who missed two recent friendly games has been passed fit to make the 20-man squad.

The same applies to lead striker Nicholas Kipkirui  who also sat out the two games due to a slight knock but recovered on time to make the list to face his immediate former employer Gor Mahia.

But out is mid kingpin Peter Pinchez Opiyo who had been struggling with a knock since the return to sporting activity in early May.

Pinchez missed the last game against Tusker in late March and it will be the second straight game that Sanjin will have to do without him.

Also out is teenager Timothy Babu Ouma who had made the squad in each of the last 16 games into the season.

Making it back to the match day lineup after missing the Tusker clash is striker Ebrima Sanneh. He had a fractured wrist in March but has now fully recovered.

Striker Ezekiel Odera is another arrival to the 20-man squad after the Tusker miss.

Odera, a former Gor employee, is one of three players that last featured in City Stars last premier league game against Gor in July 2016. Oliver Maloba and Calvin Masawa are the other two, and are both in the squad.

Odera and Sanneh take up the place of Ouma and John Kamau who takes a rest.

Also back is utility defender Edwin Buliba who, like Sanneh, is fully recovered from injury. He takes up the place of Wycliffe Otieno who has also been rested.

Head to head: Gor Mahia (H) vs Nairobi City Stars (A)

Nairobi City Stars will be up against reigning and record Kenyan champions Gor Mahia at the Utalii grounds on Sunday 16 May 2021 in the final 2020/21 Premier League first leg tie.

Into the game, Gor Mahia sits eighth with 19 points, two better than eleventh placed Nairobi City Stars with two games in hand.

Ahead of the game, we trace back to the past for fine liners from the archives.

First and last

From their first ever meeting in the 2005/6 season on 4 December 2005 at City Stadium, Gor and City Stars have met a total of 22 times till the 2016 season where the latter fell off the top league to the second tier.

The first game was won by City Stars 1-0 off a lone strike by Samuel Ouma.

The last encounter between the two was back on 24 July 2016 at Nyayo Stadium; a game Gor Mahia won 2-1.

Then, Harun Shakava’s 22nd minute goal was cancelled a minute later by Ezekiel Odera. However, a Collins Okoth goal in the fourth minute of added time saw Gor scoop all available spoils.

From last lot

Rather interestingly, Shakava and Odera will be facing off on Sunday as the two returned to their former clubs after several detours over the past few years.

Shakava is the only surviving member from the Gor Mahia squad that last faced City Stars.

Odera is joined by Oliver Maloba and Calvin Masawa from the squad that played in July 2016.

Goals, Away record

In the previous 22 encounters, Gor boasts the best record having won 11 games compared to City Stars’ four wins. The other seven have been draws.

Gor Mahia has outscored Simba wa Nairobi 30-15 goals.

Scaled down to Gor’s home games, such as the upcoming one on Sunday, Gor has posted six wins in 11 games.

Incidentally, all City Stars three on-the-pitch wins against Gor have been in away games. One home win was awarded when Gor failed to turn up for a game back in June 2006. The other two have been 0-0 draws.

Newness

Over the past 11 seasons that they faced off, Gor – City Stars games were predominantly played at City Stadium off the base of Jogoo Road.

12 such games were played at the venue that is now ‘dead’. Another seven were hosted at Nyayo Stadium. Two were played at Hope Centre in Kawangware and only one at Kasarani.

This time round, and for the first time ever, the next Gor-City Stars game will be played at the Utalii grounds off Thika Road.

One other new phenomena in the upcoming game is the men at the touchline. Coach-wise, European feel will be in place.

Gor is under the arms of Carlos Manuel Vaz Pinto while City Stars is under the watch of Bosnian Sanjin Alagic who lead the team to promotion at the close of last season.

Never has Pinto been so close to Sanjin but, for the first time, that will happen at Utalii on Sunday.

While Sanjin seeks out a first against Gor, previous coaches that have led City Stars against Gor include; Robert Matano who handled the first four games, John Bobby Ogola (3 games), Oliver Page (1), Ken Odhiambo (4), Gideon Ochieng (2), Bai Malleh Wadda (1), Robinson Ndubuisi (2), Paul Nkata (1), Gabriel Njoroge (1) and Richard Tamale Pinto (1).

Top scorers

The top scorers on either side – Ugandans – in this encounter are no longer part of either establishment.

With three goals, Jimmy Bageya was the best scorer for City Stars against Gor while, with five goals, Danny Sserunkuma was the best for Gor against City Stars.

While Bageya had played for Gor in his hey days, Sserunkuma joined the current Kenyan champions from City Stars.

Bageya’s first, and most memorable goal was in April 2011, as it led City Stars to a 1-0 win at City Stadium.

Danny Sserunkuma scored five times for Gor against City Stars. He is the only Gor player to have scored a hat trick against City Stars – during a 4-1 win at Nyayo Stadium in October 2014.

Sserunkuma has one goal on George Odhiambo who scored four times against City Stars.

Which way?

While Gor will be hoping to advance their record over City Stars, the visitors will bank on their away record over the Champions for positive results on Sunday.

This is what coach Sanjin had to say ahead of the clash;

“We are excited to start with Championship matches after a long stop,”

“It will be a challenging match against a big team, who have good individual players and a great tradition,”

“But that only goes to motivate my players to give their best. To achieve positive result tomorrow we must at our best level and play one high quality match,”

“To be honest we don’t feel the pressure, I believe that part is more on Gor because they are favorites,”

“You must know that does not mean favorites will always win, that’s the reason why football is so attractive and interesting,”

“I believe with the right approach and attitude, we can achieve positive results.” added Sanjin
