Head-to-head: Gor Mahia (H) vs Nairobi City Stars (A): 2021/22 FKF Premier League season

For a second time this year, Gor Mahia will host Nairobi City Stars in the FKF Premier League, this time at the Nyayo National Stadium on Thursday 30 December 2021 starting 3 pm.

The game was previously earmarked for Kasarani but had a late shift to Nyayo Stadium, a venue City Stars last played a premier league game back on 11 September 2016 while hosting Western Stima.

Gor Mahia last hosted City Stars at the Utalii grounds in mid-May and grabbed all points after a 1-0 win.

It will be Premier League game number 25 when Gor – City Stars face up on Thursday.

From the previous 24 games, Gor boasts the best record having won 12 to City Stars’ four. The other eight have been drawn.

In the 24 games, Gor Mahia has outscored Simba wa Nairobi 32-16 goals.

Scaled-down to Gor’s home games, such as the upcoming one on Thursday, Gor has posted seven wins in 12 games. City Stars has won three and the other two games have ended in barren draws.

Of note is that City Stars is yet to pick a win in games hosted by Gor Mahia since April 2011, and a point since May 2013.

Last time out when Gor hosted City Stars, Portuguese coach Carlos Manuel Vaz Pinto was in charge while City Stars was under the watch of Bosnian Sanjin Alagic.

Seven months later there will be changes on either side; Mark Harrison on the Gor Mahia side will be coming up against Nicholas Muyoti, the City Stars head coach.

Form-wise, Gor, and City Stars are carrying losses to the Thursday game. While Gor went down 2-1 to Kakamega Homeboyz in their last outing, Simba wa Nairobi had a narrow 1-0 fall to KCB.

Table-wise, Gor Mahia sits fifth in the 18-team FKF Premier League log with 18 points, one ahead of seventh-placed City Stars.

    League set for resumption

After close to a month out, the FKF Premier League is set to resume with match day seven games on Saturday 4 December 2021.

In one of the games, Nairobi City Stars will host Kariobangi Sharks in Ruaraka starting 1 pm.

The league took a two week breather after the Government took over football affairs from the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) during the international break.

Resumption of the league was well received by City Stars head coach Nicholas Muyoti who said: “We are happy the league is back. We are ready to play,”

Also excited at the league return is team coordinator Samson Otieno who can now attend to operation matters ahead of match days.

“Our playing unit has been training for over three weeks and have are yearning for competitive football hence the overall happiness at the return of the league,” said Samson

After the first six rounds of play, City Stars sits third in the 18-team log with 13 points. Sharks are second on the log with the same number of points as Simba wa Nairobi, and ahead on goal difference.

After the last set of games, City Stars hit Vihiga Bullets 4-0 to be named the team of Week 6 alongside providing the coach and player of the week.

Following a 4-0 thumping of Vihiga Bullets at Ruaraka on Saturday 6 November 2021, Nairobi City Stars had a clean break to be awarded three special mentions.

Skipper Anthony Muki Kimani, with an assist and goal in the game, was picked as the player of the week as tactician Nicholas Muyoti was named the coach of the week.

It was indeed a good week for Muki as he was named the MVP in the game and later went on to make the Week 6 dream team alongside stopper Salim Shitu Abdalla who scored the first goal in the game – his first of the season.

Overall, Simba wa Nairobi was voted in as the team of the week after the massive win that saw City Stars match two similar winning score lines – the best ever -, that was set on 11 Feb 2006 (vs Kisumu Telecom at Nyayo Stadium) and 22 Oct 2011 (vs Congo United at Hope Centre).

The massive win saw City Stars shoot to the 13-point mark to sit third in the 18-team log after round six matches. In the process the team topped the Form table.

On Saturday 13 November 2021, Nairobi City Stars hand in hand with the Jonathan Jackson Foundation (JJF) partnered with Green Juniors Environmental Ambassadors CBO, and Nairobi Metropolitan Services (NMS), joined forces to clean up a section of Mukuru kwa Reuben.

Beyond the clean-up, the exercise allowed all partners to engage with the community at large on the importance of conserving the environment.

Besides, the youth at Mukuru – footballers in particular and fans at large – had a first-line to meet their stars at City Stars. It was a connection point.

Club chair Jonathan Jackson led the exercise and was flanked by JJF CEO Diana Sifuna alongside City Stars head coach Nicholas Muyoti.

Due to an international break, City Stars had a free weekend and will be back in league action with a trip to Bandari next weekend.

The FKF Premier League will take a weekend break before resuming from 19-21 November 2021.

The cut-short, after round six matches on Sunday 7 November, has been necessitated by two final 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifiers for Kenya.

Kenya has two upcoming assignments against Uganda (away) and against Rwanda (Home) on Thursday 11 and Sunday 15 November 2021, respectively.

Nairobi City Stars heads to the recess on the high of a 4-0 take-down of Vihiga Bullets at Ruaraka on Saturday 6 November in Ruaraka.

After the international break, the team will be away to Bandari on Sunday 21 November. Till then, the team sits third on the log with 13-points, one behind record champions Gor Mahia.

According to head coach Nicholas Muyoti, the boys have been handed some rest days before kick-starting preparation for the Mbaraki trip.

“They have a few days rest till Wednesday then we resume and start shaping up for the next assignments starting with Bandari,” said Muyoti

After Bandari, the team will host Ulinzi Stars the Saturday after before hitting the road once against to face Kakamega Homeboyz at Bukhungu on Wednesday 1 December.
