    Chumsy states his aim

Right back Kevin Chumsy Okumu, 22, returned to City Stars in the ended week on loan from Wazito FC for the remainder of the season.

Soon after clocking a full 90 minutes during a round 64 Betway Cup tie against Mutomo Tigers on Saturday in Kitui, Chumsy revealed the drive that brought him back to familiar ground.

He provided an assist in that game to striker Ebrima Sanneh for the fourth and final goal as Simba wa Nairobi ended up as 4-1 winners.

“I’m glad to have started over the weekend in the Betway Cup which we won 4-1 and I got an assist in the match,” started Chumsy

    “I’m excited. It’s another new chapter in my life,” he added on his return to City Stars before adding;

“Nothing is guaranteed but I’ve come here to work hard and help the team by bringing my experience. That’s the main aim. I just want to enjoy my football and get back playing again and get my feet back on the pitch.”

“I’ve obviously had a previous relationship with the manager (Sanjin Alagic) and the players as I was at City Stars for four years. I’ve played under Sanjin before, so he knows my qualities and what I can bring to the team,”

“It’s important that a player and manager have a good relationship. He’s got really good morals, he gets his team working hard and I’ve had a chat with him already and there are no guarantees- it’s down to me to put the work in and put the shift in, to get into the team and play well week-in, week out.” summed the youngster

Chumsy joined City Stars in mid 2016 but left at the expiry of his contract last year to seek a new adventure.

    Chumsy returns

Right back Kevin Chumsy Okumu is back at Nairobi City Stars, albeit on loan from Wazito FC, for the rest of the season.

Chumsy served City Stars for four years but left mid last year at the expiry of his contract.

Return of the versatile Chumsy to Simba wa Nairobi is a big boost to the backline especially the right channel that lacked a natural fit.

“The beauty of his return is that he rejoins a setup that understands him well as he will find the same band of coaches and players he left behind,”

“He is most welcome home and now it is upon him to reclaim his old position in the team.” said team coordinator Samson Otieno

Chumsy, a key member of City Stars promotion lot last season, made his premier league debut while at Wazito during the clubs’ opening game against Kariobangi Sharks but found playtime hard to come by thereafter hence his return to a team he joined back in mid 2016 from Young Rovers.

While he was away, the right back position was interchangeably claimed by Wycliffe Wiked Otieno and Azizi Okaka.

After training for a few days, Chumsy is in line for a game in the domestic cup – Betway Cup – when the team travels to face Mutomo Tigers in Kitui on Saturday 13 February 2021.

He will don jersey no. 19 vacated by Jimmy Bageya who has since left the club.

City Stars players on the move

Stopper Tedian Esilaba Atuto as well as wingers David Gateri and Nahashon Thiong’o have all been cleared by Nairobi City Stars to join other clubs in the current transfer window that opened on 25th January 2021.

Thiong’o has now been cleared to join National Super League (NSL) Mwatate United where he will link up with two former City Stars players Cornelius Mwangi and striker Stephen Citi  Mwangi. All left the club in December 2019.

Gateri has moved to Bidco United as Esilaba, who joined Simba wa Nairobi on a short term deal in January 2020 from Fortune Sacco, is headed to AFC Leopards.

During the pre 2020/21 season window, some of the players that switched clubs at the expiry of their contracts included Kevin Chumsy Okumu (Wazito), Levis Lovae Opiyo (Gor Mahia) and Eric Cantona Ochieng (Mt. Kenya United).

Peter Mwangi Wine Wainaina (Kangemi United) who exited the club in December 2019 as well as Stephen Mweni (Mwatate United), also made moves in that window.

    Chumsy says bye

After four good years at Nairobi City Stars, versatile right back cum winger Kevin Çhumsy Okumu (pictured no. 28) has waved good bye.

Okumu arrived at City Stars in mid-2016 from Young Rovers at a low moment as just months later the team got relegated from the Kenyan Premier League (KPL) to the second tier.

He left almost exactly four years later with an exact opposite – having contributed to the club’s promotion back to the KPL after four seasons in the cold. He scored twice and had four assists in the 70.3% minutes earned during the promotion rally.

Okumu became a free agent in July 2020 at the expiry of his contract. In spite of having an offer from the club for an extension, the on-demand Chumsy opted to scan the horizon for a fresh challenge.

    He left with a clear parting shot;

“They were 4 good wonderful years. In June 2016 when I received offer from Nairobi city Stars, I was convinced that this was where I had to play,”

“Today I am certain that it was the best of decisions. There were so many happy times, some sad and it was always very intense,”

“I learnt a lot about myself. I developed a great deal, becoming a better player and a better person. With each training session, with each game, with every minute spent in dressing room, I was always learning,”

“The time has now come to move on. I am certainly going to miss my teammates. I will miss all the staff at the club who’ve always treated me like a son and I will miss the fans,”

“I leave with my head held high, safe in the knowledge that I won things here and always did my best in a Nairobi City Stars shirt!”

“My heartfelt thanks go out to all of you and God bless you!”

    Commenting on his departure, club CEO Patrick Korir said;

“He served us diligently and we at Nairobi City Stars wish him the very best in his future endeavors. Simba wa Nairobi‘s blessings are with him.”

In joining City Stars, Kevin followed the path of his sibling Collins Okumu who featured for the club in the 2014 season.

  • Forced break a blessing in disguise

Forced break a blessing in disguise

A number of Nairobi City Stars players have been handed lifelines to return to near, or full fitness, following indefinite cancellation of the leagues from mid-March due to the Corona Virus outbreak.

As the league wore on, some players were falling off from starting berths to the bench, or out of the squad all together, following varied injuries.

Defensive midfielder Charles Chale Otieno, strikers Jimmy Bageya and Vincent Jamaica Otieno, defenders Wycliffe Otieno and Edwin Buliba are some of the players who would have otherwise missed games had the Corona Virus disrupt not arrived.

    Under treatment

For Chale (pictured), a atural deep 6, his season was as good as over had matters not reset from the norm following the arrival of the pandemic.

A knee injury – a complex tear to the lateral meniscus – diminished enforcer and spoiler Chale’s performance to an extent he had been asked to sit out the rest of the season. He’s been undergoing weekly observation and rehabilitation at the Muchatha Health Care, a renowned Physiotherapy & Sports injury clinic.

According to team trainer Grace Wang’ondu, “Chale may not be fully fit on time as his case is about managing the injury and pain. With strengthened muscles around the injury he may get to a point where he can play with rehab and physio”.

A take-two to a rebound in Kericho, in a game against AP Bomet at the Green Stadium on Sunday 8 March, left Bageya with a complex tear to his medial meniscus on his right knee.

Left to limp dangerously after, Jimmy missed the next game against Nairobi Stima on Saturday 13 March – his first miss of the season. He would have only returned, if all went well, after three to four weeks.

Teenage striker Vincent had been part and parcel of games 2 to 25 between September 2019 to early February but an acute knee injury during a friendly game in early February saw him off the squad for a month. He was to start normal training in readiness for league games.

Buliba suffered a patella tendonitis and IT band syndrome on his left knee during a crucial game against Nairobi Stima. He did not complete the match and has been undergoing physio sessions since then.

Big defender Wycliffe,a regular starter since match day 6 back in September 2019 has been playing while on rehab to a mild-Achilles tendon pain. Chances are he would have missed some games to fully recover.

    Lesser cases

Away from those five cases, two other players; keeper Levis Opiyo and striker Ezekiel Odera are expected to fully recover from minor concerns suffered from recent games; patella tendonitis and mild Achilles, respectively.

Collectively, and baring any new developments, the seven players are expected to be on equal footing to contest for playing places once the league resumes at the end of the sporting lock-down due to Corona Virus.

    Recovered

Right back Kevin Okumu, who missed out the last two games, had only recovered from grass burn around the knee and hip area and was rearing to reclaim his position in the team.

Two strikers; Ebrima Sanneh and Davis Agesa had had exited the physios desk by the time the league took a break.

Sanneh, the club’s top scorer had only featured once in four games but came off the bench to power in a winning header – for his ninth season goal – during the last game against Nairobi Stima.

It confirmed he had fully recovered from a patella tendonitis that had slowed him down since the turn of the year.

In that game Agesa clocked the whole 90 minutes for the first time in a month following the full healing of soreness and swelling around his knee.

Though league games were brought to a halt due to the corona virus pandemic, the new situation brought about by the forced break has since turned out to be a blessing in disguise for players seeking to recuperate.
