Head-to-head: Nairobi City Stars (H) vs Mathare United (A): 2021/22 FKF Premier League season

Nairobi City Stars will, for the 14th time in 18 years, host Mathare United in the premier league, this time in a matchday 19 tie on Saturday 26 February 2022 in Thika Stadium starting at 3 pm.

It will only be the second time since April 2005 that Nairobi City Stars will host Mathare United at the Thika Stadium.

During that first Thika encounter, visiting Mathare United came out tops against a City Stars team then known as World Hope with a 2-1 win with goals from Paul Ambembo and Ambrose Kamau on either half. Collins Tiego scored the consolation.

From the previous 13 games as the home team to Mathare United, City Stars has won five, drawn, and lost four apiece.

When Mathare visited City stars last in March 2021, they went down 2-0 at Kasarani Annex thanks to goals from Bolton Omwenga and Rodgers Okuse Okumu.

Heading to the upcoming game, City Stars carries a win and draw over Kariobangi Sharks (1-0) and Nzoia Sugar (1-1) as Mathare comes to the party on the back of a win over Talanta (2-0) and a loss to league leaders Kakamega Homeboyz (3-1)

When the two last faced off on 14 August 2016, Mathare carried the day with a 1-0 win at Nyayo Stadium. Robinson Kamura’s goal proved the difference.

Comparative to the first leg game played in December at Ruaraka, that City Stars won 2-0, one notable change at Mathare United is that of coach John Kamau who has since taken over from Ezekiel Akwana. City Stars is still in the hands of Nicholas Muyoti.

Table-wise, City Stars sits third on the log with 32-points as Mathare occupies spot 17 with 10 points. Each side has played 18 games so far.

    Who wins this one?

    More consideration excites Kamau

In the 2020/21 FKF Premier League season, left-footed John Kamau managed to clock five of 33 games, with just one start, on his way to clocking 165 minutes.

Fast forward to the current 2021/22 season that’s halfway through, Kamau, a former Vapor and Tusker player, has been part of the team in eleven of 18 games.

“For now I have to say the season is going on well. Everyone is getting a chance to play,”

“I am glad to be getting chances of my own to express myself and to contribute to the team to achieve its goals which is to be champions.”

Of 11 games that Kamau has made the squad this season, he’s gone on to pick three starts and has been off the bench five times.

Kamau spent a year at City Stars from 2017 but left in mid-2018 to join Tusker FC. He returned in January 2020 on a short-term deal to the end of the season aiding Simba wa Nairobi to promotion back to the top flight.  He earned a two-season deal upon promotion.

Kipkirui takes up the place of injured Erick Ombija, Madoya comes in for the unavailable Anthony Muki Kimani as Herit takes up the spot of Kevin Chumsy Okumu who is suspended for the game due to the accumulation of five yellow cards.

Njunge replaces Elvis Ochoro as Elvis comes in for defensive mid Charles Otieno who takes a rest.

From the unit that faced Sharks in the first leg this season, and lost 2-1 in Ruaraka, changes are three.

  • Four changes against Vihiga Bullets

    Four changes against Vihiga Bullets

From the squad that faced Posta Rangers in the last FKF Premier league assignment, head coach Nicholas Muyoti has made four changes ahead of a sixth-round league game against Vihiga Bullets in Ruaraka on Saturday 6 November 2021 starting 3 pm.

Due to injuries suffered from the Posta Rangers game, speedster Rodgers Okuse Okumu and Nicholas Kipirui are out of the Bullets game.

Supersub Erick Ombija was forced out of the game after picking an ankle strain in training on Thursday.

The three slots have been snapped up by John Kamau, Peter Opiyo, and Gambian hitman Ebrima Sanneh who makes the squad for the first time this season.

The final change is a tactical one. Lennox Ogutu takes a rest which allows utility Edwin Buliba back in the squad.

From the squad that took on Bullets while in the second tier back in January 2020 at Camp Toyoyo, and won 2-0, the changes are ten.

Keeper Levis Opiyo, Azizi Okaka, Jimmy Bageya who all started the game, as well as David Gateri, and Eric Ochieng who came on as subs, plus Wesley Onguso who was unused, have since left the club.

Wycliffe Otieno and Charles Otieno, who both started the game then, are not part of the upcoming game. Wycliffe is yet to fully recuperate from an ankle dislocation suffered in August as Charles is on rest.

Seven players who featured in the Camp Toyoyo game; Calvin Masawa, Oliver Maloba, Kevin Okumu, field skipper Anthony Kimani, Ebrima Sanneh, Ezekiel Odera, and Salim Abdalla, are all in line for yet another Bullets game, albeit at a higher level.

Unused subs then; Jacob Osano, Buliba, and Vincent Otieno aka Jamaica, are all part of the squad.

Keeper Stephen Njunge, defenders Kenedy Onyango, Dennis Wanjala, midfielders Sven Yidah, Michael Madoya, and Timothy Ouma, all signed later, will be angling for a first test against Bullets.

They will be joined by Kamau, Peter Opiyo, Davis Agesa, and Elvis Noor Ojiambo who all missed the January game.

Two first-half goals by Ebrima Sanneh and Salim Abdallah, off a cross and corner from John Kamau, set off Simba wa Nairobi to a 3-0 romp over home team Vapor Sports at the Hope Centre, Kawangware on Tuesday 2 November 2021.

The first goal came in the 10th minute with Abdalla doubling things up in the 37th minute.

A goal off the blind side, from a Davis Agesa delivery across goal, settled the tie in the final minutes of the second half.

Head coach Nicholas Muyoti used the tie to hand match fitness to the players who did not feature in the last FKF Premier League game against Posta Rangers at the Thika Stadium on Saturday. That game ended 1-1.

Maloba was a second-half substitute for Agesa in the Posta game. It was his first premier league game this season.
