Head-to-head: KCB (H) vs Nairobi City Stars (A): 2022/23 FKF Premier League season

KCB FC will host Nairobi City Stars on Wednesday 5 April 2023 starting 3.15 p.m. during a match day 22 FKF Premier League tie.

Annex is the same venue that KCB hosted Simba wa Nairobi in their last two home encounters; in December 2020 and May 2022, posting 1-0 and 3-2 wins, respectively.

Since the year 2005, the bankers have been host to City Stars 12 times and have gone on to win nine of them. The other three games have ended in a draw, and two losses to City Stars.

In spite of the records, City Stars heads to the tie on the back of a 3-0 win over Mathare United, as KCB parades a 0-0 away draw against Kakamega Homeboyz.

As was the case last year, touchline-wise, City Stars coach Nicholas Muyoti will be up against his counterpart Zedekiah Zico Otieno on KCB’s end.

On the log, Simba wa Nairobi is placed 15th with 20 points in the 18-team standing, 18 points adrift fifth-placed KCB.

The four take up the places of defender Edwin Buliba and midfielder Victor Owino who both saw red in the last game against Mathare United, on-loan James Mazembe who is not permitted to play against his parent club KCB, and defender Timothy Muganda who takes a rest.

Salim Abdallah notes the changing tide

Four games into the second leg of the current 2022-23 FKF Premier League season, centreback Salim Abdallah aka Shittu believes changes in game approach and results for Nairobi City Stars are for all to see.

During the ended month-long mid-transfer window, Simba wa Nairobi roped in six players to scoop the team out of the relegation red zone. Shittu returned after an eight-month rest, alongside five other players

“I just came back home and fitted in seamlessly since I am not a newcomer,” said Shitu

“The team is now playing purposeful football and I believe it has the capability to finish in the top 8,”

“We have started the second leg well. From those games we have two wins and as many draws. And there are two clean sheets. You can sense the change in tide compared to the first leg.” added Shitu

Since his return to the Simba wa Nairobi stable, Shitu has featured in all four second-leg games improving his Kenyan top-flight games to 138.

Newton Ochieng inspired by debut goal

Midfielder Newton Ochieng is on the search for more goals after breaking his duck in the Kenyan top flight in the 3-0 win over Mathare United on Wednesday 29 March 2023 in Kasarani Annex.

On as a substitute, Newton raced down the middle in the 86th minute to slum home a well-weighted pass from debutant James Mazembe finishing off a counterattack.

His goal topped up on Kelvin Etemesi’s brace – debut goals in the Kenyan premier league – that handed City Stars a 2-0 cushion.

“It has been my daily dream to have a goal in the top flight. When I got subbed in, I knew we were going to have more goals because of the two-goal advantage we had,” said Ochieng

“The urge to score was on me, especially when after (Kelvin) Etemesi broke his league silence with a brace. It inspired me to put the ball back in the net even though at that stage we were playing without two players,”

“It feels good to score and hopefully in the coming next matches I will go in with the same urgency.”

Newton, an offseason signing from third-tier side Vapor Sports, was playing his 15th game of the season. He has so far amassed 607 minutes.

In the previous game against Wazito, Newton provided an assist that Mohammed Bajaber headed home for Simba wa Nairobi to claim all spoils right at the death with a 2-1 win.

Kelvin Etemesi opens up after maiden premiership goals

After 12 unsuccessful attempts in the Kenyan Premier League, forward Kelvin Etemesi Injili finally found his scoring boots that earned him his maiden goals – a brace – in the most recent game against Mathare United at Kasarani Annex on Wednesday 29 March 2023.

Etemesi grabbed his first ever topflight goal in the 22nd minute and went on to complete his brace three minutes into the second half. Vincent Owino provided both assists.

“I thank God for all these; it feels good to be on the scoresheet today for my first Premier League goal(s). I have been working hard to get here,”

“I thank the team for pushing me and believing in me. There’s more to come.” added Etemesi

In the Mathare game, Etemesi, formerly of Kangemi All Stars till the start of the season, made his ninth start of the season, earning his 13th game.
