Mohammed Bajaber delighted with Premier League debut

His big moment came, finally! After three and a half months of waiting, attacking midfielder Hamudi Mohammed Bajaber, on loan from Starfield Academy, made his Kenyan Premier League debut on Sunday 15 May 2022 in Ruaraka as Nairobi City Stars held champions Tusker FC to a 0-0 draw.

Bajaber replaced forward Nicholas Kipkirui in the 85th minute to great applause from the fans watching on.

His first touch of the ball a minute after coming on, a header to an Augustine Kuta freekick, flew just wide.

“Mohammed had a good debut. Though on for a short time, it is evident he has the quality needed,” said head coach Nicholas Muyoti

Mohammed’s debut came a week after he had been named to the squad for a premier league game for the first time ever, in the previous game against Wazito FC. He was an unused substitute.

“I am really glad I made my (premier league) debut and earned some playtime infront of fans. I hope I can continue this way and help the team move forward,” said Bajaber

He now has his work cut out; to push for more minutes in the final four games of the season against KCB, Gor Mahia, AFC Leopards, and FC Talanta within the next one month.

Nairobi City Stars 0 Tusker 0

Home team Nairobi City Stars and FKF Premier League Champions Tusker FC fought out to a 0-0 draw in a 30th round clash in Ruaraka on Sunday 15 May 2022.

The results saw Simba wa Nairobi, posting a third straight clean sheet and 14th overall in the season, hit the half-century mark of 50 points to remain fourth as Tusker stagnated at the second spot with 56 points.

City Stars came to the game with a tweaked lineup with four starting changes from the team that beat Wazito 1- in the last encounter.

Former Tusker lad Michael Madoya and Rodgers Okuse Okumu earned rare starts as regular right-back Kevin Chumsy Okumu was up a field as a right-winger, while Anthony Muki Kimani came in to solidify the midfield. They took up the places of  Ezekiel Odera and Davis Agesa who missed out due to suspension and injury, and the Noor siblings Elvis Ojiambo and Timothy Ouma who dropped to the bench.

Champions Tusker had a go at the City Stars goal on three occasions within the first eight minutes serving up the tone of the game.

Right-back Daniel Sakari dropped a cross in the box in the fifth minute only for it to weave wide after failing to get a connection. A minute later, a poor start from stopper Wycliffe Otieno was intercepted but keeper Jacob Osano did well to stop a direct attack on goal.

Shami Mwinyi Kibwana should have done better two minutes later when a cross found him unmarked but he smacked the ball high up when it was easier to score.

Shami’s attempt came off a counter after his keeper Patrick Matasi launched a quick restart soon after he had taken in a Herit Mungai freekick.

In the 13th minute, Tusker forced the first corner of the game that was wasted and two minutes later, Madoya, who had a good day in office, on the other end whipped the ball across goal off a throw-in.

As the clock ticked 24 minutes, City Stars had wasted a corner earned by Chumsy as defensive-mid Sven Yidah fired a long ranger straight at Matasi. And there was a Tusker corner that yielded a throw, but all were fruitless.

The goal attempts then reduced progressively as City Stars knitted passes in midfield. With two minutes to the breather, Chumsy landed in the Tusker box only for Matasi to get ahead of him to stop the danger,

The final action of the half came off a long-range shot from Stewart Omondi but Osano came out tops to force a corner that produced another. Osano collected it to end the first half action.

At the start of the second half, City Stars threw in Timothy Babu Ouma for Okuse as Tusker pulled out Shami and Shaphan Oyugi Siwa and brought in Eric Zakayo and John Njuguna in their place.

Three minutes into the second half, City Stars striker Nicholas Kipkirui looped the ball goalward only for it to land on the roof of the net.

A minute later Kipkirui earned a freekick off stopper Christopher Oruchum who earned a yellow card. Babu’s take forced a corner that was not accounted for.

Seven minutes later Tusker striker Ibrahim Joshua earned a yellow card for a foul on the line on returning Muki who had missed the last two games.

In between, Babu and Njuguna had fired the ball wide and off-target on either end. On 59 minutes, Kipkirui had a goal attempt off the edge of the box fly wide too.

Four minutes after the hour mark, Tusker brought in Ugandan Deogratious Ojok and Clyde Senaji for Rogers Ouma and Stewart Omondi.

Within the next three minutes, Osano was forced to stretch to his fullest to concede a corner off a Njuguna shot. A follow-up corner was wasted. A freekick soon after by Njuguna found Zakayo but his header clipped the woodwork and went out for rhe greatest of nearmisses.

In the 72nd minute Tusker pulled out Ibrahim for David Majak and four minutes later City Stars responded with the arrival of Elvis Noor Ojiambo and Augustine Kuta for Muki and Madoya.

In between the changes, Yidah had the best chance to break the deadlock only to fluff a perfect low ball in the box from Herit.

In the 84th minute, and to great cheers, City Stars coach Nicholas Muyoti handed on-loan Starfield Academy forward Mohammed Bajaber his Kenyan Premier League debut as he rested Kipkirui. He sneaked in behind the defense to receive a Kuta freekick for his first touch but his header aimed for the near post went wide.

In the dying minutes, Osano pulled a massive save to keep City Stars in the game after punching out a Zakayo shot for a corner.

Four added minutes could not separate the teams as City Stars wasted a corner and Tusker, once again, failed to beat an outstanding Osano in goal with a last-ditch effort.

With a barren stalemate, City Stars failed to nail their first premier league home win over Tusker since 12 Sept 2009. But they will enjoy a four-point haul from the champions this season having won the first leg tie at the same venue in mid-January 1-0.

Next up for Simba wa Nairobi is an away game against KCB on Saturday 22 May 2022 starting 3 pm.

Nairobi City Stars will host league leaders Tusker FC in a mathcday 30 FKF Premier League tie at Ruaraka grounds – for the first time ever – on Sunday 15 May 2022 starting 3 pm in what will be premier league game no. 26 between the two since October 2004.

City Stars’ last home win against Tusker was back on 12 Sep 2009 at Hope Centre, a game that ended 3-2. Arthur Museve’s goal and a second-half brace from Collins Tiego secured the win. Tusker had led 2-1 at halftime through goals by Jockins Atudo and an own goal from City Stars defender George Karanja.

Though a home win has been years back, City Stars heads to the Sunday game with two identical 1-0 (away) Premier League wins over Tusker within the last year.

Into the game, both sides are buoyed by wins; City Stars with a 1-0 win over Wazito and Tusker with a 2-0 triumph over Kakamega Homeboyz.

Muki, Chumsy return for Tusker duel

Anthony Muki Kimani and Kevin Chumsy Okumu are the only two changes made as Nairobi City Stars shape up for a showdown with FKF Premier League champions Tusker in Ruaraka on Sunday 15 May 2022 starting 3 pm.

The duo missed the last two games against Kenya Police and Wazito FC, and are now back in place of Ezekiel Odera who is suspended due to (five) yellow card accumulation, and Davis Agesa who picked an injury in training.

While Muki missed the last two games due to a red card suffered against Sofapaka, Chumsy had been out with an injury.

Save for the two inclusions, the other 18 players, including Mohammed Bajaber who was named to the lineup for the first time against Wazito FC, maintained their positions.

Amboko talks up record-equalling 14th Premier League win

For only a second time, and for the first time since the 2005/6  season, Nairobi City Stars has registered 14 season wins in the premier league.

The rare fete was matched on Monday 9 May 2022 following a 1-0 win over Wazito in Kasarani. Striker Ezekiel Odera scored the lone goal via a penalty in the second half to confirm a season double over Wazito.

Odera, City Stars

Long-serving John Amboko, a greenhorn when City Stars – then known as World Hope – registered 14 wins in its first top-flight season back in the 2005/6 season, now talks up the latest development;

“We have been working hard as a team and we are still working hard until our last game,” said the current assistant coach.

“First, getting six points from Wazito this season is such a great feeling as we had been losing to them each time we met in the previous seasons,”

“The win did put us (back) in contention of the league again and these last five matches will determine a lot as we stand a very good chance to break that record,”

“About us equaling the 2005-2006 season wins, especially as a coach, after a long time, it’s such a great feeling and it’s pretty special.” added Amboko

City Stars will attempt a record win number 15 in the top flight on Sunday 15 May 2022 in Ruaraka when they host champions Tusker FC from 3 pm.

The team managed 12 premier league wins last season (2020/21) after one other win over Zoo FC was omitted following the team’s expulsion from the league.

Nonetheless, the 12 wins were one more than the eleven registered in the 2006/7, 2008, and 2009 seasons which were the only other seasons the team posted double-digit wins. For each season from 2010 to 2016, City Stars had less than ten wins.
