Head-to-head: Nairobi City Stars (H) vs Nzoia Sugar (A): 2021/22 FKF Premier League season

For only the second time in the premier league, Nairobi City Stars will host Nzoia Sugar in an eighth round FKF Premier League tie on Wednesday 8 December 2021 in Ruaraka starting 1 pm.

It will a first time meeting at Ruaraka as during the season opening game last season – in their maiden top flight clash – Simba wa Nairobi hosted Nzoia Sugar in Narok.

In that game, City Stars ran out 2-0 winners thanks to goals by field skipper Anthony Muki Kimani and Oliver Maloba in a two minute blitz.

The only other premier league tie between the two was last seasons’ reverse tie that was also held at Narok due to covid 19 restrictions that prevented Nzoia Sugar from hosting the game at the Sudi Stadium in Bungoma.

Both teams head to the game dented as City Stars fell 2-1 in their last assignment to Kariobangi Sharks in Ruaraka as Nzoia went down 1-0 to visiting Kakamega Homeboyz in Sudi.

Stretching back to last season’s opener, there is a change in coaches on either end.

While Nicholas Muyoti is in for Bosnian Sanjin Alagic at City Stars, Ibrahim Shikanda is the man in charge of Peter Mwaura.

Tablewise, City Stars is up fifth with 13 points compared to Nzoia who are further down at 17th spot with two points.

City Stars chair Jonathan Jackson handing over reusable bottles to Nairobi City Stars head coach Nicholas Muyoti at Ligi Ndogo on Fri 3 Dec 2021

City Stars opts for Eco-friendly hydration

As the saying goes; “Staying hydrated is essential but using one-off plastic bottles is not.”

It’s from that adage that Nairobi City Stars has opted to introduce reusable water bottles across its team setup, from players to the management, for Eco-Friendly hydration!

On that front, Simba wa Nairobi Chair and bankroller Jonathan Jackson handed out steel water bottles to each member of the team for use going forward.

With the steel bottles, Jonathan has put a stop to the use of one-off plastic bottles by City Stars – save for only during matches due to hygiene.

“Hydration is very important, but rather buy plastic bottles that can easily be left behind to litter the environment, why not carry around your own reusable water bottle?

“This is the reason City Stars are taking a stand and discontinuing use of single-use plastic bottles. From now on each team member will carry around a reusable bottle,”

“Plastic pollution needs to be taken very seriously because, without elaborate recycling plans, it’s a slow way of wreaking havoc to our environment and by extension out planet. We need to put a stop to it hence our choice as City stars to adopt eco-friendly water bottles. I highly encourage more teams to follow suit.” added Jonathan

Nairobi City Stars 1 Kariobangi Sharks 2

Nairobi City Stars fell 2-1 to visiting Kariobangi Sharks in Ruaraka during a seventh round FKF Premier League tie played on Saturday 4 December 2021.

Sharks went to the break with a goal advantage after a Geoffrey Lemu penalty awarded in the 24th minute after the pair of Simba wa Nairobi stoppers Kenedy Vidic Onyango and Lennox Ogutu bullied and mugged goal-charging Felix Oluoch in the box.

Ten minutes into the second half it was level after City Stars goal poacher Ezekiel Odera poked home from close range.

13 minutes later, substitute Patrick Otieno lobbed the ball past keeper Osano after connecting to a delivery from the right by Mata.

There could have been a different start, and probably end to the game, had City Stars made use of early chances.

In just the third minute, a corner delivered by skipper Anthony Muki Kimani landed at stopper Lennox in the box but he skied the ball while chasing the earliest of goals.

Sharks responded four minutes later with a freekick by Steve Otieno – awarded after an Oliver Maloba tackle at the edge of the box – came off the upright for a fruitless corner.

Three minutes later, teenage sensation Timothy Noor Ouma aka Babu squared a perfect ball to Oliver Maloba who made a mad dash for goal.

But alas! when it was the easier choice to score, while on a one-on-one with Sharks keeper Brandon Obiero, he made the shot-stopper a hero after a brilliant save. Babu pounced on the second ball that ended up with Obiero.

At the quarter hour mark it was Odera’s turn to miss while in the box off a Davis Agesa cross from the right.

The near misses were punished in the 24th minute when Sharks went ahead from the spot.

A leveler for City Stars was seemingly in the offing in the 33rd minute but Agesa’s header while at the six yard area off a Dennis Decha Wanjala cross from the left flew just wide.

Five minutes to the break Babu added to the long list of should-have-been when he smacked the crossbar off a pass from Maloba at the byline.

The second half started with Sharks bringing on stopper Tom Teka for injured skipper Samuel Olwande.

The entrant was to miss a clearance ten minutes later that Odera whacked home with his left foot to level matters.

Immediately after the equalizer Sharks coach William Muluya brought on Patrick Otieno for Geoffrey Onyango. It only took him 12 minutes to score the winner.

A minute after that goal, Babu almost got City Stars back level when he escaped his markers to meet a freekick by Decha but his attempt for the far post got a hand from Obiero for a wasted corner.

Two further Decha freekicks into the box were dangerous as one had a penalty appeal waved on after a rebound shot by Babu, while the other was smacked right at the cross bar and back in play.

The last quarter of an hour saw Sharks defend relentlessly as City Stars threw everything upfront to seek a share of the spoils but it ended short as two corners could not be accounted for and a Peter Opiyo’s header at the death weaved just above bar.

It was only the second time that City Stars was hosting Sharks, and it ended in a similar 2-1 defeat as was the case back in January at Kasarani Annex.

With the win, Sharks shot to the top of the log with 16 points as City Stars dropped to fourth with 13 points.

Next up for Simba wa Nairobi is a game at the same Ruaraka against Nzoia Sugar on Wednesday 8 December 2021 starting 3pm.

Head-to-head: Nairobi City Stars (H) vs Kariobangi Sharks (A): 2021/22 FKF Premier League season

For only the second time in the Premier League, Nairobi City Stars will host Kariobangi Sharks in a seventh round FKF Premier League tie on Saturday 4 December 2021 in Ruaraka starting 1 pm.

Simba wa Nairobi hosted the Sharks for the first time ever in the top flight towards the end of January this year in a tenth round game in the 2019/20 Premier League season at Kasarani Annex.

Davis Agesa’s 33rd minute tap-in – his maiden goal in the premiership – turned out to be a consolation for City Stars as Sharks scored on either half with goals from Julius Masaba and Erick Kapaito to claim three precious points with a 2-1 win.

The only other premier league game between the two was the reverse tie in the 2019/20 at Utalii in May this year. City Stars won the game 2-1
City Stars and Sharks head to the game with an equal 13 points after the first six games of the season but Sharks – the best scoring side in the league thus far – is placed second just as ahead of their hosts, albeit on goal difference.

Both teams trail record 19-time champions and current log leaders Gor Mahia by a point.

Form wise, City Stars carries a draw (1-1) over Posta Rangers and win (4-0) over Vihiga Bullets from their last game while Sharks comes to the game on the high of two convincing wins over Mathare United (6-0) and champions Tusker (3-0).

A notable change between the January game and the Saturday game will be in touchline personnel for City Stars.

Then, City Stars was coached by Bosnian Sanjin Alagic but this time round the team is in the hands of Nicholas Muyoti who will coming up against William Kanu Muluya who’s been in charge of Sharks since 2016.

Who comes out tops at Ruaraka on Saturday?
