Nairobi City Stars 2 Bandari 1

Two goals within five minutes by Timothy Noor Ouma and Ezekiel Odera handed Nairobi City Stars a 2-1 win over Bandari during an FKF Premier League matchday 24 tie played at Ruaraka grounds on Saturday 2 April 2022.

The game had a nervy finish after Bandari grabbed what turned out to be a consolation in the 78th minute via a penalty by substitute Umaru Kasumba. The Ugandan forward was felled in the box after a touch from stopper Salim Abdalla.

Ouma activated the scoresheet with his fifth goal of the season in the 15th minute with a sublime freekick that beat keeper Moses Wanyika all the way. Stopper Lennox Ogutu won the freekick after being fouled soon after receiving a mid-pitch ball from Kevin Okumu.

In the 20th minute, Odera smacked home a low drive for his seventh goal of the season after completing Ouma’s cross that received a mild touch from skipper Anthony Muki Kimani.

The win turns around a 1-0 defeat to the same side in the previous round in Mombasa.

City Stars moved to the 41 point mark after the win but returned to third by end of the day after Tusker held KCB to a 1-1 draw at the same venue.

Muki, Odera top Babu in scoring

With five goals each, midfielder Anthony Muki Kimani and forward Ezekiel Odera are atop the Nairobi City Stars scorer’s board at the conclusion of 18 games in the 2021/22 FKF Premier League season.

The two experienced players lead teenager Timothy Babu Ouma who follows closely with four goals.

With five goals so far, Muki and Odera have improved on their haul of four goals they each scored last season.

Odera was the first player at Simba wa Nairobi player to hit the five-goal mark this season with his lone goal that handed City Stars all spoils against Kariobangi Sharks in early February at Kasarani Annex.

Odera ties Bageya’s goal tally, eyes all-time record

That goal saw Odera surpass the four goals that made him a top scorer for the club in the 2016 season, and his tally in the 2020/21 season.

Muki caught up with Odera in the next fixture against Nzoia United during a historic first visit to Sudi Stadium, a game that ended 1-1.

Beyond the trio of Muki, Odera, and Babu who account for half the goals scored, are Rodgers Okuse Okumu, Erick Jibaba Ombija, Sven Yidah and Peter Picnhez Opiyo who have scored two goals each.

The friendly aimed at giving most of the players who missed, or did not register full minutes, the Saturday game against Kariobangi Sharks that City Stars went on to win 1-0.

City Stars led 1-0 at halftime courtesy of a Timothy Babu Ouma goal off an assist by Anthony Muki Kimani.

Another Babu – Rowland Makati – doubled matters halfway through the second half after getting to the end of fullback Kevin Chumsy Okumu.

Makati’s goal set the tone for Mike Madoya to add the third with a shot in the box. Nicholas Kipkirui provided the assist.

Kibra United grabbed one of their own, a consolation, after a set of neat passes to fire home within the final ten minutes of the game.

City Stars restored their three-goal cushion after Vincent Jamaica Otieno pounced on a perfect Chumsy pass from deep to beat Kibra United keeper at close range for the fourth goal.

  • Kakamega Homeboyz 4 Nairobi City Stars 4

Kakamega Homeboyz 4 Nairobi City Stars 4

Visiting Nairobi City Stars dug deep to come to pick a vital point after rallying to tie home team Kakamega Homeboyz 4-4 in a 15th round FKF Premier League in Bukhungu Stadium, Kakamega on Thursday 20 January 2022.

The game brought immediate former Homeboyz coach Nicholas Muyoti face to face with his former deputy Bernard Mwalala, the man now in charge of Abana Beingo.

Muyoti’s substitutes Erick Ombija and Davis Agesa, on for Ezekiel Odera and Anthony Kimani in the 70th minute, respectively, proved the masterstroke as they went on to score in the 80th and 84th minute for Simba wa Nairobi to silence the crowd and force the draw.

Homeboyz, hosting City Stars for only the fourth time in nine years, called the shots from early on and went a goal up in the 15th minute when stopper Brian Eshihanda’s header, off a corner from livewire David Okoth, echoed off the undersigned of the crossbar and bounced on the line.

The center referee went on to award it as a goal to the wild protestations from City Stars. Less than ten days back, City Stars was denied a goal in similar circumstances while playing FC Talanta at Kasarani Annex.

Eight minutes later Homeboyz were 2-0 up after Okoth scored a penalty awarded after left-back Dennis Wanjala was adjudged to have clipped Stephen Opoku as worked his way into the box after receiving a corner.

City Stars vehemently disputed the call but came out as the losers after the center ref slapped right back Kevin Chumsy Okumu and striker Ezekiel Odera with yellow cards. Okoth stepped up and sent the ball beneath Jacob Osano who had dived the right way for Homeboyz to double matters.

A minute after the half-hour mark City Stars forced a corner and, a quick take by Muki found teenage sensation Timothy Babu Ouma who squared the ball for Sven to head in at the near post to half the scores.

Homeboyz, however, restored their two-goal cushion in the 38th minute when Yema Mwana on the right-wing capitalized on a poor clearance from City Stars to find an unmarked Moses Mudavadi in the box and the skipper made no mistake from close range to smack home the third for Abana Beingo.

Moments later City Stars resilience showed when right back Okumu received a long ball from Peter Pinchez Opiyo on the right. He placed it to  Timothy Babu Ouma who one-timed the ball home after racing to the box past keeper Elix Otieno to end his ten-game goal drought.

Spurred, City Stars chased a leveler before the breather only for the center referee to prematurely end the game with a corner in the air.

There were no added minutes in the half in spite of the fact that City Stars stopper Salim Shitu Abdalla had spent close to four minutes on the ground to receive treatment by medics within the first ten minutes of the game, and Ezekiel Odera too for about two minutes in the 43rd minute.

At the start of the second half, Muyoti pulled out winger John Kamau and stopper Edwin Buliba and threw in Oliver Maloba and former Homeboyz stopper Kenedy Vidic Onyango.

Eight minutes later, Vidic was adjudged to have shoved Yema Mwana after he flew into the box to receive a perfect Mudavadi splitting pass, and the referee, again, awarded a penalty.

No amount of protestations from City Stars could overturn the penalty and once again Okoth beat Osano to send Homeboyz 4-2 up.

Less than ten minutes after the fourth goal, Mwalala brought in Ahmed Ali Bhai and Stephen Wakhanya for Sunday Mutuku and Stephen Opoku, correspondingly. In the 71st minute, Nigerian forward Michael Karamor took up the place of Chris Masinza.

But with the game seemingly out of reach, City Stars resilience and character showed when Chumsy fired a freekick from the right to find Ombija in the box. He volleyed the ball home to reduce the scores to 4-3.

And four minutes later, Agesa lobbed the keeper for the leveler from the tightest of angles on the right off a pass from Sven.  Agesa’s goal, his first this season, and only his third premier league goal, set up a nervy finish to the game.

There were five added minutes after regulation time, but second-placed City Stars held on to their greatest comeback yet to hit the 27-point mark from 15 games to stay five points behind leaders Homeboyz whom they host in a reverse fixture on Monday 24 January 2022 in Ruaraka starting 3pm.

  • Tusker FC 0 Nairobi City Stars 1

Tusker FC 0 Nairobi City Stars 1

An 87th-minute goal by substitute Oliver Maloba, off a sure pass from Timothy Babu Ouma, handed Nairobi City Stars a 1-0 win over home team Tusker FC in Ruaraka on Sunday 16 January 2022.

The latest result, coupled with others, sees Simba wa Nairobi shoot to the second spot with 16 points stretching away from Tusker who remains 13th with 16 points.

It was Maloba’s first goal of the season, and it earned City Stars their second straight win while visiting Tusker in six months at the same venue.

He had only been on the pitch for 12 minutes after taking up the place of out-and-out striker Ezekiel Odera.

The game started on a high and City Stars, parading an unchanged lineup from the one that hit FC Talanta 2-1 in the last game, could have been up with a goal as early as the third minute had Odera, scorer of the lone and winning goal against Tusker in late July 2021, burst into the box and chose to make one more step before shooting allowing stopper Christopher Oruchum to clear the ball.

Five minutes later Tusker won a freekick on the left but eventually wasted it. It took a whole of six minutes to take the dead ball after an incident in the box left City Stars stopper, Salim Shitu Abdalla, on the ground. He received a heavy bandage on his head.

Tusker had a chance to take the lead a minute after the quarter-hour mark but a shot from outside the box by John Njuguna rattled the crossbar and straight to the arms of City Stars keeper Jacob Osano who went on to register a seventh clean sheet in 13 games.

The 20th minute, bubbly Timothy Ouma broke into the box to receive a perfect John Kamau cross. But as was the case with Odera earlier, he took a little too long to pull the trigger allowing Tusker to force a fruitless corner.

Within seven minutes after the half-hour mark, Kamau, a former Tusker winger, had sent a freekick right to keeper Brian Bwire as Babu’s attempted long-range chip fell shot. On the other end, Tusker’s foreign forwards Deograetius Ojok and Ibrahim Joshua had shots that Osano contained well to keep City Stars in the game. Ojok’s follow-up freekick earned a corner that bore no fruits.

In the 40th minute, City Stars left-back Dennis Wanjala saw his freekick, earned by Peter Pinchez Opiyo, clip the upright.

The rest of the minutes before the breather saw Pinchez waste a freekick as Babu’s cross for Kamau ended with Bwire before he fired an Odera cross at the side netting.

At the start of the second half Tusker brought in Shami Kibwana for Ojok and within the next few seconds, they had a freekick that only rolled out for a freekick.

Within the next seven minutes Sven Yidah, with a man of the match performance all through, attempted a shot on goal off a freekick from skipper Anthony Kimani. It was bundled back in play. On the other end, Shami’s cross arrived in the box but Ibrahim failed to connect to it.

A minute after the hour mark, Shitu went into Davies Omweno’s book due to a high boot clearance. Tusker however could not get the most of the awarded freekick.

In the 70th minute Erick Ombija took up Kamau’s place and five minutes later he was joined by game hero Maloba who was accompanied by Tusker pair of Clyde Senaji and Stewart Omondi who replaced Humphrey Mieno and Lawrence Luvanda, respectively.

In between Ombija’s arrival and the follow-up three subs, Sven had given a dangerous freekick at the edge of the box but as had been the case in the game, Tusker wasted it despite the good range.

Tusker was awarded a corner in the 76th minute but wasted it and in the next minute had Rodgers Ouma carded for a foul on Babu.

As the clock struck 80 minutes, Babu and Maloba combined well in the Tusker box only for the latter to miscue the ball marginally wide.

That combination had a different effect six minutes later when Babu picked out a dashing Maloba who bundled the ball home past Bwire for the winner.

Just before the goal, Muki gave way for winger Davis Agesa.

The game was to end with one last corner for Tusker who were hosting City Stars for the 13th time since the year 2003.
