Head to head: Gor Mahia (H) vs Nairobi City Stars (A)

Nairobi City Stars will be up against reigning and record Kenyan champions Gor Mahia at the Utalii grounds on Sunday 16 May 2021 in the final 2020/21 Premier League first leg tie.

Into the game, Gor Mahia sits eighth with 19 points, two better than eleventh placed Nairobi City Stars with two games in hand.

Ahead of the game, we trace back to the past for fine liners from the archives.

    First and last

From their first ever meeting in the 2005/6 season on 4 December 2005 at City Stadium, Gor and City Stars have met a total of 22 times till the 2016 season where the latter fell off the top league to the second tier.

The first game was won by City Stars 1-0 off a lone strike by Samuel Ouma.

The last encounter between the two was back on 24 July 2016 at Nyayo Stadium; a game Gor Mahia won 2-1.

Then, Harun Shakava’s 22nd minute goal was cancelled a minute later by Ezekiel Odera. However, a Collins Okoth goal in the fourth minute of added time saw Gor scoop all available spoils.

    From last lot

Rather interestingly, Shakava and Odera will be facing off on Sunday as the two returned to their former clubs after several detours over the past few years.

Shakava is the only surviving member from the Gor Mahia squad that last faced City Stars.

Odera is joined by Oliver Maloba and Calvin Masawa from the squad that played in July 2016.

    Goals, Away record

In the previous 22 encounters, Gor boasts the best record having won 11 games compared to City Stars’ four wins. The other seven have been draws.

Gor Mahia has outscored Simba wa Nairobi 30-15 goals.

Scaled down to Gor’s home games, such as the upcoming one on Sunday, Gor has posted six wins in 11 games.

Incidentally, all City Stars three on-the-pitch wins against Gor have been in away games. One home win was awarded when Gor failed to turn up for a game back in June 2006. The other two have been 0-0 draws.

    Newness

Over the past 11 seasons that they faced off, Gor – City Stars games were predominantly played at City Stadium off the base of Jogoo Road.

12 such games were played at the venue that is now ‘dead’. Another seven were hosted at Nyayo Stadium. Two were played at Hope Centre in Kawangware and only one at Kasarani.

This time round, and for the first time ever, the next Gor-City Stars game will be played at the Utalii grounds off Thika Road.

One other new phenomena in the upcoming game is the men at the touchline. Coach-wise, European feel will be in place.

Gor is under the arms of Carlos Manuel Vaz Pinto while City Stars is under the watch of Bosnian Sanjin Alagic who lead the team to promotion at the close of last season.

Never has Pinto been so close to Sanjin but, for the first time, that will happen at Utalii on Sunday.

While Sanjin seeks out a first against Gor, previous coaches that have led City Stars against Gor include; Robert Matano who handled the first four games, John Bobby Ogola (3 games), Oliver Page (1), Ken Odhiambo (4), Gideon Ochieng (2), Bai Malleh Wadda (1), Robinson Ndubuisi (2), Paul Nkata (1), Gabriel Njoroge (1) and Richard Tamale Pinto (1).

    Top scorers

The top scorers on either side – Ugandans – in this encounter are no longer part of either establishment.

With three goals, Jimmy Bageya was the best scorer for City Stars against Gor while, with five goals, Danny Sserunkuma was the best for Gor against City Stars.

While Bageya had played for Gor in his hey days, Sserunkuma joined the current Kenyan champions from City Stars.

Bageya’s first, and most memorable goal was in April 2011, as it led City Stars to a 1-0 win at City Stadium.

Danny Sserunkuma scored five times for Gor against City Stars. He is the only Gor player to have scored a hat trick against City Stars – during a 4-1 win at Nyayo Stadium in October 2014.

Sserunkuma has one goal on George Odhiambo who scored four times against City Stars.

    Which way?

While Gor will be hoping to advance their record over City Stars, the visitors will bank on their away record over the Champions for positive results on Sunday.

    This is what coach Sanjin had to say ahead of the clash;

“We are excited to start with Championship matches after a long stop,”

“It will be a challenging match against a big team, who have good individual players and a great tradition,”

“But that only goes to motivate my players to give their best. To achieve positive result tomorrow we must at our best level and play one high quality match,”

“To be honest we don’t feel the pressure, I believe that part is more on Gor because they are favorites,”

“You must know that does not mean favorites will always win, that’s the reason why football is so attractive and interesting,”

“I believe with the right approach and attitude, we can achieve positive results.” added Sanjin

    Football returns after suspension

After close to five weeks of suspension, football has been handed the green light to return to action following a Presidential address on Labour Day (1 May).

During his speech to the Nation, President Uhuru Kenyatta announced a raft of lifts, one being that of Sports that had been suspended in late March due to a spike in Covid-19 cases and related deaths.

In light of the Presidential announcement, the Federation has since confirmed a return of league matches and have set a tentative date of 12 May as the return date.

    A communique from League Manager David Thiru read;

    “Dear Clubs

His Excellency President of Kenya announced the resumption of sporting activities in the country. Subject to adherence to the new Covid 19 protocols be put in place by the Ministries of Sports and Health.

We are tentatively working with the 12th of May as the start date.

Please note that the resumption will be in full compliance with the resumption protocols mentioned above.”

The lifting of Sports suspension was well received at Nairobi City Stars and the club has called for immediate return to training.

“This is indeed very good news. We were lost during the suspension and not sure what to do. Now we can focus on an immediate return to training and the remainder of games in the season,” said team coordinator Samson Otieno

“We are now waiting for fixtures from the league managers to allow us plan our logistics accordingly.” added Samson

Following the announcement, head Coach Sanjin Alagic, who did not hide his joy after the resumption announcement, has called for return to training on Monday 3rd May.

“I really look forward to start training. I am very happy. It was boring without training and matches. We shall start training on Monday.” said Sanjin

City Stars last game was a round 16 clash with Tusker, a game that ended 2-2 on 20 March 2021.

By the time of suspension, City Stars was tenth in the 18-team log with 20 points.

Coach Sanjin looks forward to league resumption

After a stretched stay back in Bosnia, Nairobi City Stars head coach Sanjin Alagic is back in the country ready to continue from where he left.

Sanjin left the country on Sunday 21 March 2021, a day after leading Simba wa Nairobi to a 2-2 draw with log leaders Tusker for a scheduled week long rest and recuperation.

That however turned to a month as, during the week that he travelled, Sports in the country was suspended, among a raft of other changes, following a spike in Covid 19 deaths and cases due to what was termed the ‘third wave’.

“Following the recent vaccination process on premier league players I was hoping to return to prepare the team for immediate league resumption,” said Sanjin

“But I am informed that the game is still suspended and we can’t even assemble for training. That’s a little strange but what to do. We can only wait for things to normalize,” he added

    The coach compared the situation back home and in Kenya;

“Bosnia is also under lockdown due to a rise in corona virus cases. However, sports has not been affected and the league is still on,”

“It is therefore my hope that, just like in Bosnia, that the our league will resume in due course.”

By the time he left for recess, City Star sat tenth with 20 points from 16 rounds of play.

When the league resumes, Simba wa Nairobi will be up against champions in the 17th and final game of the first leg before venturing into second leg fixtures as well as domestic Cup games.

    Sanjin delays return

Head coach Sanjin Alagic has delayed his return to the country following the suspension of Sports.

The Bosnian had travelled home for a scheduled holiday on Sunday after leading City Stars to a 2-2 stalemate against Tusker and was to return on Tuesday 29 March 2021.

However, while he was away, the Government announced suspension of Sports due to the rising numbers of Covid-19 infections and deaths.

The Federation followed up on that announcement by calling off all leagues across the country indefinitely.

“Sanjin took days off to be with his family as the weekend after playing Tusker was a free one due to Kenya’s involvement in two Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Egypt and Togo,” said team coordinator Samson Otieno

“But while he was away sport was suspended indefinitely due to rise of Covid-19,”

“From the management’s view there was no point of him returning as the team is now inactive and can’t even train due to the new containment measures by the Government,”

“He will be back once the suspension is lifted.” added Otieno

    Speaking from his base in Sarajevo Sanjin said;

“I spoke with the chairman and he told me to stay back until the situation becomes better. If things change – like if the team can start training – then I will change my ticket and come back immediately.”

City Stars was to take on champions Gor Mahia on Sunday 4 April but that game has since been shelved as well as second leg ties.

Tusker rallies to draw City Stars

Nairobi City Stars and Tusker eked out a 2-2 draw at Utalii grounds in a round 16 premier league game played on the afternoon of Saturday 20 March 2021.

It was a tale of two halves, as City Stars’ Simba wa Nairobi went to the break with 2-0 cushion off two sublime goals from skipper Anthony Muki Kimani in the eighth and 18th minute to increase his tally this season to four goals.

But in the other stanza, Tusker called on their depth from the bench to level the game with goals from Kevin Monyi in the 52nd minute and substitute Chrispinus Onyango in the 77th minute to earn a sixth draw against City Stars since year 2004.

Inside the first five minutes had forced two freekicks from range off Muki and flyer Rodgers Okuse Okumu.

But it is the third off Okumu on seven minutes that counted for something as Muki stepped up to fire straight at goal past a perplexed Emery Mvuyekure for the first of the game.

Ten minutes later midfielder Sven Yidah took matters on his own hands and, from mid pitch, trailed the right channel into the box then squared the ball back for a charging Muki who smacked the ball home at the far post to double the lead.

It was Muki’s first ever brace for City Stars, and the club’s 15th Premier League brace  since 2004, that increased his tally to four to catch up with stalwart Peter Pinchez Opiyo as the club’s top scorers.

Right after the water break striker Erick Ombija got to the end of a Kevin Chumsy throw in only to fire wide.

Not too far off Bolton Omwenga had a near mess when he gave the ball away in the box but big centre back Kenedy Vidic Onyango came to his rescue to with a mop up job that saved the day.

At the half hour mark Macharia won the ball at the edge of the box after dispossessing stopper Salim Shitu Abdalla whose attempted dribble failed miserably. He played Meja in the box but Njunge picked it up to deny what seemed a clear goal. Shitu received a good scolding from his mates for the near goof.

That move came seconds after Muki, while on a counter, in seeking a hat trick, had attempted a lob on Emery that went wide.

Three minutes later Apolo Otieno struck a perfect freekick but once again Njunge was up to the task to save the stinger.

The minute after a relentless Muki attempted yet another lob off an Ombija knockdown whiskered just above earning a fruitless corner off a finger tip from Emery. He was to have one similar chance just before half time but his flick off Bolton’s freekick went, again, wide.

On 40 minutes Tusker threw away a glorious chance when another Meja-Macharia move saw the latter sky an effort.

At the start of the second half Tusker brought in Humphrey Mieno and Erick Zakayo for skipper Hashim Sempala who handed the armband to Eugene Asike, and Brian Marita, respectively.

Four minutes into the half Apolo sent a low dangerous freekick just wide but three minutes later, they got something out of nothing when right back Kevin Monyi lobbed the ball high that fortuitously dinked past a backpedaling Njunge who was off his line for Tusker’s first.

The next minute Tusker were marauding in the City Stars box again but Chumsy came to the rescue with a timely pick and clearance.

It was the trigger the log leaders needed as they went to high gear. Three minutes later Mieno fed Zakayo but his volley saw the skies.

A minute after the hour mark it was Tusker that we under attack when combative striker Erick Ombija zoomed into the box only to fire straight at keeper Emery.

Two minutes later Luke Namanda should have done better than fire across the face of goal when, from a few meters from the goal line, he wasted a Meja donkey work.

City Stars opted for changes after that attempt bringing on new signing Nicholas Kipkirui for his debut at the expense of Rodgers, and Davis Agesa for Oliver Maloba.

Tusker responded with the arrival of Chrispinus for Macharia and after the water break topped up with George Blackberry Ogutu for Luke Namanda.

Moments later it was level when a high ball into the City Stars box from Monyi was unchecked. It found Meja who fired at Njunge but his spill found Onyango who squared it home just minutes after coming on to the field of play for Macharia.

A rather rusty Kipkirui was then to fire at the side netting as the game wound down as Timothy Babu Ouma came on for Muki who shifted the armband to Shitu.

In the dying minutes Meja took a rest for Ochieng as John Kamau grabbed only his second league appearance this season taking over from a tiring Ombija.

The game ended with Babu missing out on hero status when, with the final ball of the game after being put through in the box, fired across goal when going for the far post.

With a new point, City Stars moved a place up to eighth place with 20 points from 16 games as Tusker stretched a point ahead from the chasing pack to the hit the 36-point mark from 16 games.

Next up for Simba wa Nairobi is a game against champions Gor Mahia in the 17th and final first leg clash on Sunday 4 April 2021 at Kasarani.
