Nairobi City Stars 1 Posta Rangers 2

For the first time in six attempts, visiting Posta Rangers ended a streak of five straight topflight draws since 2011 after beating Nairobi City Stars 2-1 in a 21st round FKF Premier League played in Thika on Wednesday 9 March 2022.

Rangers scored in the fifth meeting through Patrick Otieno and then with seven minutes to time through substitute Cavin Odongo to cruise to the win.

Stopper Lennox Ogutu had tied the game at the stroke of halftime when he sneaked on the blindside to head a perfectly floated freekick by Dennis Decha Wanjala at the near post past the reach of keeper Jairus Adira.

Otieno’s opener was initiated right after City Stars keeper Steve Njunge left his line to chase a ball and when a cross arrived from the left, Otieno took his time before placing it high at the corner for Rangers’ opener.

City Stars should have been 1-0 up as early as the third minute but Davis Agesa fluffed a Timothy Babu Ouma pass in the box to hand Adira an easy picking. Adira’s quick restart is what yielded the opening goal for Rangers.

Within the next few minutes, City Stars’ response was a freekick by Babu and a corner by Decha that were both wasted.

By the 20th minute, a purposeful City Stars spurn four chances by Babu that all went begging including a shot that flew wide.

In the 22nd minute, a lively Patrick Otieno forced Njunge to a fine save to concede a corner that was cleared.

Njunge had to be at this best five minutes later to punch out a freekick, and two minutes later to stop a Rangers’ counter with a catch atop the box as the visitors looked to double matters.

Two corners for City Stars within the same period did not amount for much.

At the half-hour mark, Maloba miscued a header off an Agesa cross. The next moment Rangers’ forward Brian Otieno attempted to sneak the ball at near-post but Njunge was keen to pick it up.

Moments later stopper Kenedy Vidic Onyango saw yellow for stopping a charge to the box. That confirms that he is suspended for the next game.

With the game heading to halftime, City Stars leveled through Lennox who caught up with a high freekick from Decha to head in when it seemed the ball was rolling out of play.

Minutes into the second half, Babu scored off a Decha freekick but the goal was ruled out for offside.

Within the next five minutes, Posta bundled out a freekick from the edge of the box and City Stars wasted two corners.

The swings in search of goals by either side continued and in the 57th minute Otieno took a good shot in the box but it flew marginally wide as Posta looked to take the lead.

In the 71st minute Rangers brought in Eliud Lokuwam for Brian Marita and moments later flyer Rodgers Okumu and Erick Ombija arrived for Agesa and Maloba, respectively.

Five minutes after arrival, Lokuwam thought he had put his side in the lead when he tapped from close range but it was denied due to an offside.

In the 79th minute, Posta pulled out right back Dinken Mwenda for Sammy Imbuye as Cavin Odongo came on for Jackson Dwang.

Cavin’s needed just needed three minutes to settle and was at the right place at the right time to smack home a spilled ball from Njunge in the box to score what turned out to be the winning goal.

His goal came to minutes after Brian Otieno had let fly a shot from outside the box.

Cavin’s goal spurred Simba wa Nairobi who went in search of the leveler. They found the back of the next five minutes later when stopper Vidic fired a rebound off a freekick but it did not count as he was ruled offside. Babu got a yellow for protesting the offside call.

To lock out City Stars from forward progression, moments after they brought in Augustine Kuta for Nicholas Kipkirui, Posta brought in Kenedy Odhiambo, and Victor Majid for Patrick Otieno and Vincent Wasambo at the stroke of full-time.

With 21 rounds played, City Stars stays third with 35 points as Rangers’ moved up to sixth with 32 points with the win.

Next up for Simba wa Nairobi is an away trip to Bukhungu, Kakamega to face Vihiga Bullets on Sunday 13 March 2022 starting 3 pm.

  • Head-to-head: Nairobi City Stars (H) vs Posta Rangers (A): 2021/22 FKF Premier League season

Head-to-head: Nairobi City Stars (H) vs Posta Rangers (A): 2021/22 FKF Premier League season

For only the sixth time in the Premier League, Nairobi City Stars will host Posta Rangers in a matchday 21 tie to be held at Thika Stadium on Wednesday 9 March 2022 starting 3 pm.

Never has City Stars beaten Rangers as hosts, as the past five encounters in 2010, 2011, 2012, 2016 and 2021 all ended in even-stevens.

The first two games ended in 1-1 draws and the next two in barren draws while the last one ended in a 2-2 draw after Nicholas Kipkirui bundled home an injury-time leveler in Ruaraka.

From the archives, the Wednesday game will be, overall in the topflight, the 12th encounter between the two. City Stars has only won once in the past eleven games and Posta twice.

For the first time ever, City Stars will host Rangers at the Thika Stadium, the same venue that hosted the first leg game of the current 2021/22 season.

That game, hosted by Rangers, ended in a 1-1 draw after Simba wa Nairobi came from behind for a share of the pie.

Between the first leg and now, Rangers has had a change in coaching with Salim Ali as the new man in charge taking over from Stanley Okumbi.

City Stars bench is as-is and once again Nicholas Muyoti will be leading his charges against the Rangers at the Thika Stadium.

From the last set of games, City Stars and Rangers are reeling from defeats, incidentally at the same venue on the same day last week.

Rangers went down 3-1 to log-leaders Kakamega Homeboyz and soon after City Stars fell 2-0 to Bidco United.

The defeats by either side serve up the perfect tone for a Wednesday game in Thika.

Table wise, City Stars is up third on the log with 35 points, as Rangers is seventh with 29 points.

Who comes out tops in this one?

    Three changes against Posta Rangers

Introduction of Vincent Jamaica Otieno, Rodgers Okuse Okumu, Erick Ombija and Sven Yidah are the four changes made from the squad that faced Bidco United last weekend, for the upcoming tie against Posta Rangers set for Thika Stadium on Wednesday 9 March 2022 starting 3 pm.

Jamaica returns after missing the last ten games as Sven and Okuse make the squad once again after sitting out the last two games against Mathare United and Bidco United.

Ombija is in ending a four-game miss.

The quartet take up the places of Elvis Noor Ojiambo, John Kamau, Charles Otieno and Ezekiel Odera who saw red in the last encounter.

From the squad that faced the same side in late October 2021 at the same venue, posting a 1-1 draw, changes are four.

Jacob Osano, the starting keeper then, is still on rest and his place has been taken up by Elvis Ochoro.

Odera who started the game then, Mike Madoya who was a late sub, and Elvis Noor Ojiambo who was an unused sub, are all out.

Their places have been taken up by defender Herit Mungai, Augustine Kuta, and Peter Opiyo.

  • ‘Muki’ earns City Stars point from Rangers

‘Muki’ earns City Stars point from Rangers

A well-orchestrated goal by field skipper Anthony Muki Kimani in the 52nd minute canceled out Brian Marita’s freekick in the 36th minute to force a 1-1 draw for City Stars against Posta Rangers in a fifth-round FKF Premier League tie played at the Thika Stadium on Saturday 30 October 2021.

It was the eighth Posta Rangers – City Stars premiership draw registered in eleven encounters since the year 2010.

Muki – later name MVP – had given away a freekick just outside the box that Marita planted home for the opener to send Rangers with a 1-0 advantage at the break.

Interestingly, from the same spot he gave away the foul, Muki slammed home a sumptuous goal seven minutes after the restart after getting to the end of an Ezekiel Odera lay-up. Odera had been picked out in the box by teenager Timothy Ouma aka Babu.

Simba wa Nairobi’s game plan was distorted very early on when forward Nicholas Kipkirui was forced out of the game as early as the 17th minute after receiving a cut above his right eye when going up for a knockdown.

He had been forced out of a game against Wazito at the same grounds in similar circumstances close to a week back. On both occasions, he was replaced by speedster Rodgers Okuse Okumu.

Four minutes into the game, Rangers’ had the first real chance to activate the scoresheet when Vincent Wasambo arrived in the box only to send a ball just wide with City Stars keeper Jacob Osano beaten.

City Stars had a chance to go 1-0 up in the 20th minute when Okuse, with a darting run, found himself at a vantage spot in the box to receive a Timothy Ouma pinpoint pass. He shockingly skied the ball.

That was two minutes after Muki had blasted a freekick into the Posta wall after Victor Majid had fouled Ouma.

Five minutes after that freekick, Okuse rounded his marker only to take the ball out with his speed when the intent was to deliver a cutback.

On 28 minutes Ouma burst into the Rangers box only to be mugged off the ball as Rangers neutralized the danger.

The next minute Rangers were in the City Stars box only for Lennox, a former Mathare United stopper, to lunge at the ball to clear it out.

Two minutes later it was another freekick for City Stars outside the box won by Ouma. Dennis Wanjala effort earned an unsuccessful corner.

The breather arrived with a Davis Agesa header, off a Kevin Chumsy Oumu delivery, flying wide.

In the second half, the real danger, other than City Stars leveler from Muki, came off Rangers skipper Eliud Lokuwam who, found in space, burst into the box but just before he pulled the trigger. stopper Kenedy Vidic Onyango knicked the ball from his feet to save Rangers from going 2-1 up.

A minute after the hour mark, Rangers initiated a counter-attack, off a cleared corner by City Stars, that ended up at the side netting. Chrispinus Ochieng got to the final ball then beat keeper Osano only to be forced to a tight angle by Lennox to fire out.

At the 70th minute Rangers midfielder, Majid received a yellow card after a nasty tackle on Muki who thought he should have received a harsher punishment.

Majid was replaced almost immediately by Jackson Dwang. He was accompanied out by Chrispinus whose place was taken up by Sammy Odero.

The final quarter of the game saw Rangers add more attackers; Dennis Oalo, Francis Nambute, and later Timothy Otieno but City Stars defenders stood tall to the very end.

With a point, from the eighth draw in the 11 games against Posta Rangers, City Stars stays second on the 18-team log with ten points, three points ahead of their eighth-placed Saturtday hosts.

Next up for City Stars is a home game against topflight newcomers Vihiga Bullets on Sunday 7 November 2021 at the Hope Centre starting 3 pm.
