Nairobi City Stars will kick off the 2022-23 FKF Premier League season with a home game against Thika-based Bidco United on Sunday 20 November 2022 in Nyayo Stadium starting 3 pm.

It will be meeting number five for the two in top-flight football, but only the third time for City Stars as the host team.

It’s been a win a piece from the previous two games hosted by City Stars. While Bidco won the first one 2-1 in July 2021 in Ruaraka with goals from David Orem and City Stars’ old boy David Gateri. Ezekiel Odera scored a consolation penalty.

City Stars claimed the next one 2-0 in Thika Stadium in October of the same year with goals from Nicholas Kipkirui and Erick Ombija.

The Sunday tie becomes the first Premier League game between the two in Nyayo Stadium.

Once again, City Stars head coach Nicholas Muyoti will be coming up against his counterpart Anthony Akhulia for the third time. For Akhulia, it will be the fifth time that he will be facing City Stars in the Premier League.

Ronney Kola recounts Gor game in Nyayo

Defensive mid-Ronney Kola is excited about the role he played as Nairobi City Stars stopped Gor Mahia 3-1 in a friendly at Nyayo Stadium on Sunday 13 November 2022.

In the game, Kola, a natural defensive midfielder, was deployed as a stopper and played to the left of seasoned Kenedy Onyango.

In spite of the unfamiliar role, Kola was almost faultless in his new role.

According to statistics provided by Tisini, a composed Kola, other than doing a center-backs role, strung 43 (of 46) complete passes that equate to 93% success rate as he built play from the back.

He did very well. His composure and confidence was top notch,” said head coach Nicholas Muyoti

“Generally, he was very impressive and fitted very well as a centre-back. He however needs to work on his speed and insight,” pointed Muyoti

Kola, a former Kenya School of Government player, is hoping for more games to showcase his capabilities.

“It was my first tough game as a center back, my first game at Nyayo, and the first ever against Gor Mahia,”

“It was a very good game but at first I was very nervous. Then slowly I settled into the game since I believe in myself and I know my capabilities,”

“I am happy that I managed the task at hand on the day. I pray for an injury-free season as I hope to earn many games.” added Kola

Due to injury, Kola is the only City Stars player that failed to feature in any premier league game last season. He has now fully recovered and has so far featured in 11 of 18 friendly games.

Muyoti: We are as good as ready for the league

After playing five games and making it all the way to the final of the inaugural Elite pre-season Cup, head coach Nicholas Muyoti now reckons Simba wa Nairobi is as good as ready for the upcoming 2022-23 FKF Premier League.

During the tournament, Muyoti tweaked his lineup and formations severally as the team rose from group ‘B’ as the runners-up to make the semis, then the final.

In sum, Muyoti tested 24 players in the two-weak tournament save for stopper Edwin Buliba and striker Pius Omachi who were both nursing injuries.

“Indeed we had so much to learn and picked very good pointers for the upcoming season. Now we have a very clear picture of the team apart from the few players who didn’t participate in the tournament,” he said

After the final played on Saturday 1 Oct, Muyoti handed his troops a three-day break to recuperate before the resumption of training.

“After the rest we will go back to the drawing board to fix a few issues and we will be ready before the season starts.” added the coach

In the tournament, City Stars drew 1-1 with Police, and beat MCF 4-1 before tying Ulinzi Stars 2-2.

In the semis, the team drew hosts Kariobangi Sharks 2-2 before carrying the day with a 3-2 win in post-match penalties. The team ended up with Silver after falling 2-0 to Police in the final.

  • Osano welcomed back

    Osano welcomed back

Goalkeeper Jacob Osano is back at Nairobi City Stars after taking time off in search of greener pastures at Ethiopian Premier League side Ethiopian Coffee (Bunna).

Osano, who made his Kenyan Premier League bow in the ended 2021/22 season, was hopeful of securing a place in Ethiopia but after slightly over a week he is back.

“He had permission from the club to head out to Ethiopia and try his luck but after slightly over a week he is back with us,”

“He had a stellar first season in the Kenyan top flight and went on to register 13 clean sheets. That made him a man on demand and was scouted by a number of local and foreign clubs,” said club CEO Patrick Korir

Speaking on the same, head coach Nicholas Muyoti said: “His time to move will come. In the meantime, we welcome him back in our fold and urge him to refocus on the tasks ahead of us.”

In the ended 2021/22 FKF Premier League season, Osano featured in 29 of 34 games clocking 2,610 minutes.

For yet another season, Osano will compete with Stephen Njunge and Elvis Ochoro for playtime in the upcoming season.
