Head to head: Posta Rangers (H) vs Nairobi City Stars (A)

Nairobi City Stars will face off with host Posta Rangers in a round seven Premier League clash at Kasarani Stadium on Friday 8 January 2021 starting 3pm.

From the record books, the Friday duel will be the ninth matchup for the two in the top flight since 2010, and the first since they last faced off on 10 July 2016.

    8 previous KPL games

Across the 2010, 2011, 2012, and 2016 premier league seasons, Posta Rangers has played against City Stars eight times; four at home and as many times away.

Of the eight, City Stars has one win, Rangers two with the other five games ending in draws. Three of the draws have been 0-0, the other two as 1-1.

In games hosted by Rangers, two two sides have each picked one win a piece with the other two ending in draws.

In July 2010, Francis Thairu, Arthur Museve and Levy Muaka scored a goal each as visiting City Stars dispatched Rangers 3-1 at City Stadium. Isiah Omondi scored the consolation.

In May 2011 Rangers as the home team avenged the 2010 defeat at Nyayo Stadium after registering a 2-1 win. Charles Okwemba and Edwin Mwaura scored for the mailboys as Arthur Museve’s penalty was City Stars response.

The next two home games for Rangers in November 2012 and July 2016 at City Stadium and Afraha Stadium, respectively, ended in 0-0 draws.

Beyond the eight games, and in the most recent meeting, Rangers tested City Stars back in November 2020 at the Jamhuri Showground in a preseason friendly. They won the game 1-0.

    Coaches and venues

In the upcoming game, Simba wa Nairobi will be led to the pitch by Bosnian Sanjin Alagic who will become the seventh coach to lead the team against Rangers.

The first four games in 2010 and 2011 were coached by Ken Odhiambo and the last four were handled by four separate coaches; Gideon Ochieng, Gambian Bai Malleh Wadda, John Bobby Ogola and Ugandan Richard Tamale Pinto, in that order.

Pinto was the last man in charge when the team’s faced off in July 2016, with Zedekiah Zico Otieno in charge for Posta. Sammy Pamzo Omollo will be handling Rangers in the Friday meet where the two sides will be facing off at Kasarani for the first time ever.

Three of the last eight games between the two were held at City Stadium, two apiece at Nyayo Stadium and Hope Centre and one at Afraha Stadium.

  • Recalling last KPL game

    Recalling last KPL game

On this day – 19th November – back in 2016, Nairobi City Stars under Ugandan coach Richard Tamale Pinto hosted Sony Sugar at Ruaraka in their 320th and last Premier League game.

Visiting Sony Sugar won it 2-1 to hand City Stars their 17th loss in the 30-game season.

Sony scored a 67th minute opener via Joseph Omweri that Ezekiel Odera (pictured) cancelled out ten minutes to time.

But Boniface Muchiri confirmed there would be no share of spoils at the Ruaraka tuff when he planted home a goal at the death to hand Sony all three points.

Less than three weeks earlier, during the third last game of the season, City Stars lost it’s 12 year Premiership status after going down 3-1 to Kakamega Homeboyz at Kasarani.

While the Ruaraka game was dead rubber for City Stars, it was an important one for Sony as they went on to finish ninth ahead of Muhoroni Youth and Bandari.

Odera’s goal was the 304th and last topflight goal by City Stars.

He recalls that day as well as club legends Arthur Museve and skipper on that day John Amboko, now both retired and part of the current City Stars technical bench.

“As a player scoring a goal is always special but also scoring a meaningless goal doesn’t add any flavour. We were already relegated to the second tier and we were just playing for pride.” said Odera who rejoined City Stars in January 2020.

“It was a formality game. We had already been sent packing from the league and there was nothing much in it other than just completing our fixture for the season.” said Museve, the current trainer at City Stars

“After already being relegated the morale in the team was already low. I had already started entertaining the idea of hanging my boots and concentrate with my job,”

“I couldn’t take it playing in the lower league. So losing the last game against Sony was not the best way to do it. But I took everything positively. It took the persuasion of my former coach Robert Matano to bring me back to playing again.” added Amboko, currently an assistant coach at City Stars

The trio are however looking ahead to the exact opposite of what’s happened then as they prepare for their first Premier league game after a four year hiatus following the team’s promotion this year.

According to revised fixtures, City Stars were to host Nzoia United on Sunday 21 Nov 2020 at Nyayo Stadium. That has since been pushed back by a week.

“We are happy to be back and look forward to our first top flight game after four long years.” Said Odera

“Museve and I certainly played our last Premier league game against Sony four years back but I am keenly looking forward to a return to that same platform from a different capacity as a coach.” Said Amboko

“We are glad to be back and will want to avoid how it ended in 2016 with a good start.” Commented Museve

City Stars will play seven games by the turn of year, the first five games being against Western based sides Nzoia United, Zoo FC of Kericho, Vihiga United, Kakamega Homeboyz and Western Western Stima, in that order.

  • Recalling Kasarani doomsday amidst promotion joy

Recalling Kasarani doomsday amidst promotion joy

30th October 2016 – exactly four years back – was certainly a black Sunday, for it was the day Nairobi City Stars received a 3-1 hiding from Kakamega Homeboyz at Kasarani to be relegated from the Kenyan Premier League after 12 straight seasons.

City Stars conceded two goals in the opening half through David Okoth and Hedmond Mauda before Ali Bai sealed the win in the 52nd minute. Gambian Pa Jassey Mulie’s long range cracker with nine minutes left was City Stars desolate consolation as the team suffered its 16th loss of the season.

And the headlines read; “City Stars relegated . . . ”

One starting line popped in a local daily; “Finally Nairobi City Stars have been put out of their misery,”

In the lead-up to the fall into the second tier trap door, City Stars had flirted with the chop for close to five straight seasons. But it was all over in 2016 as the football gods were no longer generous with survival favors. It was time to pack and drop down.

In the 2010 season, the team beat Sofapaka 2-0 at City Stadium in a round 27 game to preserve their place in the Premier with three games to spare.

In the 2011 season, City Stars hit Karuturi 4-2 at Hope Centre on final day to stay afloat. Francis Thairu’s hat trick in that game could have counted for nothing had Chemelil not held Bandari to a barren draw. It meant the coastal side went down by virtue of that draw as City Stars survived.

In the 2012 season, City Stars hang on to their status after squeezing a barren draw out of Posta Rangers at the City Stadium during the penultimate round of matches.

The script on the final day of the 2013 season was a replica of 2011. The team needed a win away to Chemelil Sugar but went down 1-0 only to be spared the relegation red zone after Homeboyz lost 2-1 to AFC Leopards at Bukhungu.

While it was a lucky escape in 2013, the team eventually went down at the end of the 2014 season after being held to a barren draw by Mathare United at Hope Centre.

However, wrangling between the league managers KPL and the overseers of the game in the country FKF meant no promoted teams were fronted to take up the place of relegated teams.

And with that City Stars was reinstated for the 2015 season where they continued with their survival script. Ebrima Sanneh’s goal against Sony Sugar – that forced a 1-1 draw – on the final day ensured another season in the top flight.

But the nine lives fizzled out at the end of 2016 when the team was escorted out by Homeboyz at Kasarani in the third last game of the season.

In the squad that lined up on the fateful day at Kasarani was a quintet that are still part of the team four years on.

John Amboko, the current assistant coach, was the skipper. He partnered Arthur Museve in the heart of defense. Museve is now trainer at the club.

The trio of Calvin Masawa, Ezekiel Odera and Oliver Maloba are still in the playing ranks of the team now christened Simba wa Nairobi. While Masawa and Odera clocked the full 90 minutes on that day, Maloba came on as a second half substitute.

All five have painful recollections of the eventuality at Kasarani on Sunday 30 October 2016.

Jimmy Bageya is one other players still at City Stars who was part of the 2016 squad but did not feature  in the relegation game.

“That was the worst feeling ever. I remember we had prepared very well and had hoped to win the match. But we started on a wrong footing by letting in some quick goals and we knew that was the end of it all.” Said Amboko who joined the club back in 2002

“It was painful. We were at a great loss. We had always survived relegation fights but on this day it was all but over. We stayed at the stadium for a while longer pondering into an uncertain future. We were no longer sure of our careers, and the life of the club in the lower divisions. It was a sad ending.” Said Museve who joined the club in 2007 from Kangemi AllStars

    Striker Odera, who top scored for the club in that final KPL season with four goals, said;

“30th Oct 2016 was a dark day. After being relegated from the premier league after so many years in the top tier we didn’t know what was going to happen to the club. As players we knew that we had let our management, fans and the club as a whole down. Coming to terms of playing in the second-tier league was a disaster.”

For Masawa, City Stars longest serving player – in the club books since 2011 – that day was coming.

“There was that sad feeling. It was not particularly nice on my end but again it was not the biggest surprise. I had seen it coming after a few years of flirting with relegation. After some few days, weeks of crying I had to accept the reality. I almost quit football but had to put on a brave face and move on knowing that all was not lost.”

For young Maloba, it was too much to take. And after that relegation he was off to Gor Mahia.

“We had done what we needed to do. We were annoyed after that game. We felt robbed, helpless. Worse still, imagine being part of a unit that ended up being relegated. It killed the dreams of some players and some ended up quitting the game completely.”

Chairperson Peter Jabuya, lost to the relegation pain, said it was important for the team to go down to find itself. He vowed that the club would exist rather than die, with a rebrand.

After years of being bedeviled by finances, lack thereof, fortune struck in March 2019 when Eldoret-born Real Estate mogul Jonathan Jackson bought out Jabuya to wholly own the team.

Check one was a quick restructure and application of the survival antics that saw the team stay afloat prior to the 2016 Premiership fall.

At the time of capture, City Stars sat 19th in the 20-team second tier National Super League (NSL) with a paltry 14 points from 22 games. 25 points from the final 16 games saw the team end a respectable 14th.

What followed was a calculated 2018/19 NSL season, with further restructuring that saw the arrival of Eastern Europe EUFA Pro coach Sanjin Alagic and careful player recruitment. The team went on to win the league with a ten-point buffer to regain their Premiership status after four seasons in the cold.

The quintet that fell with the club in 2016 have the exact opposite emotion from the one at Kasarani.

“After four long years in the dark now we are back in the premier league thanks to the support from the chairman Jonathan Jackson,”

“He has ensured the club has excellent coaching staff, quality/good training facilities, hardworking and dedicated playing unit with salaries coming on time. Not to forget our beloved and passionate fans who have been for ever present in good and bad times. Now am happy to say that we are back to where we as a big club belong.” muted Odera who returned to the club at the start of 2019 after a two-season detour

“The feeling is unbelievable, personally I am incredibly happy to be back at the topmost league in the country. This is where everyone wants to be and to make it more interesting, we are coming back with a well-organized team, sponsor, new players and new technical bench. I am just excited and can’t wait for the league to start.” Said Masawa who arrived at the club from Migori Youth back in 2011

    Assistant coach Amboko, whose only time out of City Stars was a small detour to AFC Leopards in 2013, added;

“After being out for four years we are back in the Premier League. The feeling is amazing and it’s my hope and belief that we are going to be worthy competitors. With the help of our sponsors, an amazing office,  able technical bench, talented players and passionate fans, I know we are going to give our opponents a run for their money.”

For Museve, nothing beats a return to the big league; “It’s a wonderful feeling. I was in the relegation band, and now in the lot that got the team back to where it truly belongs – in the Premier League. It’s such a good feeling.” Added the team stalwart who hang his boots at the close of the 2018/19 season to join the technical bench.

For Maloba, being up means being up, there’s no looking back down.

“Now that we are back, the morale we have is at its highest. We never ever want to go back down. It was trauma while in the lower leagues. We want to give it 200% now that we are back up and stay up there for good.” He opined.

After the relegation loss to Homeboyz, the team forced a barren draw against Ushuru – who also got relegated, before bowing out of the Premiership with a 2-1 loss to visiting Sony Sugar at Ruaraka in their 240th and final top flight game.

  • Bench role for Abich

    Bench role for Abich

It’s the end of an era as dead ball specialist Noah Abich (Noah Otieno Odhiambo) has called it a day as a footballer.

Abich Baba, as he is fondly referred to, has moved off from the pitch to take up a coaching role at Nairobi City Stars, his last duty station for the past two seasons.

His step-out from the pitch to the bench brings an end to an illustrious football career spanning close to 20 years.

His last league game for City Stars was a round 11 National Super League (NSL) game against Mt. Kenya United at Camp Toyoyo on Saturday 27 Oct 2019, a game that ended 1-1.

Abich arrived at Simba Wa Nairobi in April 2019 during the second leg of the transitional NSL 2018/19 season. He led from the front as the captain and scored eight times to top score for the club leading them to relegation survival.

In the 2019/20 season his mentorship and guidance saw the club promoted back to the Premier League to regain their premiership status lost at the end of the 2016 season.

“I wish to make it official that I have retired from football as a player. You can now refer to me as a coach as that is my new direction,”

“It’s been a long journey that has had highs and lows. I am now at a point where I want to give back by nurturing the next crop of players. I thank City Stars for allowing me to wind down my playing days and for ultimately giving me the opportunity at their technical bench to start my coaching journey at a high level.”

    The transiting Abich has received adoration from City Stars team coordinator Samson Otieno who said;

“He’s been a dedicated servant who gave his all on the pitch. We counted on him to survive relegation when the team needed an experienced hand in the 2018/19 season and he came through for us in a big way with important deliveries and goals. It is now our turn to hold his hand as he ventures into the other side of his career which is coaching.”

    City Stars CEO Patrick Korir added his voice to Abich’s change-over;

“We thank him for his dedication and diligence to the team and will support him as he scales upward to coaching. He is part of a long term plan and we will endeavor to build his capacity as we go along.” he said

The former Thur Gem and Makokho Mixed Secondary School alumnus started his competitive football at Premiership side Nzoia Sugar before moving to Chemelil Sugar. He completed his sugar belt circuit with a move to Sony Sugar in 2006 for two seasons.

He arrived at Tusker thereafter and rested back-to-back Premiership titles in 2011 and 2012. Next was a short stint at Nakuru AllStars which led him to the ranks of AFC Leopards. Later on he sampled Kakamega Homeboyz, Mathare United, Sofapaka, Bandari and Nakumatt before making a bee-line for City Stars in 2019.

The former Kenya U20 and National team player bagged several individual awards in his playing career including being the best scoring Premiership defender at Sony Sugar in 2008 and at Mathare United in 2015. Not forgetting with City Stars at the end of the 2018/19 NSL season.

Abich who has lately been coaching youngsters at Zimmerman currently holds a ‘D’ license coaching Diploma and has a chance to learn from UEFA Pro coach Sanjin Alagic from Bosnia, the current head coach at City Stars.

Abich follows Arthur Museve to the City Stars bench. Museve ended his lengthy City Stars playing career at the close of the 2018/19 NSL season to take up a trainers’ role at the club.
