Dennis Oalo: City Stars taking shape

New Nairobi City Stars field captain Dennis Oalo reckons the team has turned a corner and has become better compared to last season.

According to the forward, Simba wa Nairobi is now a more competitive lot as can be seen from early results into the 2023-24 FKF Premier League season.

“We were at the rebuilding stage last season and with time most of the players have now matured and adapted well into the league,” said Oalo

“Then, we had areas of concern within the team but now all has been fixed and everyone is raring to go,”

“We were considered the underdogs last season but now things have changed for the better. There’s a reflection to that change as witnessed by the results in the first five games of this season,” added Oalo

Oalo joined Simba wa Nairobi in last season’s mid-transfer window in March from FC Talanta. He went on to feature in 16 games scoring once and providing three assists on his way to clocking 1,109 minutes.

Into the new season, Oalo has featured in all five games as captain.

Etemesi follows Makati to team of the Week

Nairobi City Stars top scorer Kelvin Etemesi was listed in the best eleven at the close of games in match day four in the 2023-24 FKF Premier League on Sunday 1 October 2023.

That followed his heroics on Saturday where he delivered a goal and assist to lead Simba wa Nairobi to a 2-1 win over Sofapaka in Kasarani Annex.

Inevitably, he was named the man of the match, before making it to the team of the week, as well as earned a nomination for the player of the week.

It was a repeat performance from Etemesi as he had a similar show the previous weekend where he came through for the team with a goal, then earned a penalty that was eventually buried home by Rowland Makati for City Stars to come from behind to see off Nzoia Sugar 2-1 in Ruaraka.

At the end of that game, Makati – after scoring his maiden top-flight goal that turned out to be the winner – was named the MVP. Ultimately, he made it to the team of the week at the end of match day four.

“It is very encouraging to see our young players making a statement and making a difference in the team,” said team coordinator Samson Otieno

“It’s no mean fete to be ranked amongst the best in the league after a match day. Only returns that earn a team points can get you there. Kudos to Makati and Etemesi.” he added

Goals by Kelvin Etemesi and Vincent Owino on either half handed Nairobi City Stars a 2-1 win over Sofapaka during a fifth-round 2023-24 FKF Premier League tie played in Kasarani Annex on Saturday 30 September 2023.

Etemesi scored the opener two minutes after the half-hour mark with a cool finish off a Dennis Oalo assist.

Owino powered home a header off a corner kick from Etemesi – later named match MVP – at the hour mark to score what became the winning goal. It came two minutes after the home team had leveled through a header by defender Evans Maliachi.

With the win, City Stars moved to the fourth spot with eight points as Sofapaka remained at the basement with a single point.

Next up for City Stars is a home game against Kenya Police on Saturday 7 October 2023.
