Head-to-head: Nairobi City Stars (H) vs Kariobangi Sharks (A): 2023-24 FKF Premier League season

For the fourth time in Kenya’s top flight since the year 2019, Nairobi City Stars will host Kariobangi Sharks during a matchday 12, 2023-24 FKF Premier League tie set for Kasarani Annex on Saturday 25 Nov 2023, starting at 3.15 p.m.

Simba wa Nairobi last hosted Sharks on 21 Dec 2022, in Ruaraka, during a match six tie last season. It ended 1-1 after Paul Okoth’s second-half header off a corner for Sharks canceled out Vincent Otieno’s first-half goal.

That draw ended a streak of two straight losses for City Stars as hosts against Sharks. From the previous three encounters, the Sharkmen have outscored Simba wa Nairobi by five goals to three.

Form-wise, both teams head to the game on the back of losses. While City Stars went down 3-1 away to Tusker in their last encounter, Sharks were taken down 2-0 by traveling Bandari.

In the upcoming encounter, City Stars head coach Nicholas Muyoti will be up against his counterpart William Kanu Muluya for a third home game.

While Muyoti will be in search of his first home win over the Sharks, Muluya will be hunting for a third one in four games.

Table-wise, City Stars is placed 13th in the 18-team log with 12 points, a position, and a point below Sharks.

Who wins the battle of the youngest squads in the league?

Kelvin Etemesi to resume duty

After sitting out two league games due to suspension, lead Nairobi City Stars striker Kelvin Etemesi is keen to pick up from where he left off.

Etemesi was suspended at the onset of November 2023 after being carded in an away game against Muranga SEALS thereby missing games against AFC Leopards and Tusker.

“I have been out for two games that made me miss two important assignments,”

“I am now a changed man, but with the same goals. I aim to be back on the pitch, and to be back on the score sheet.” added Etemesi

Thus far, Etemesi, Simba wa Nairobi’s top scorer last season with 12 goals, currently leads the score charts with three goals and is tied with midfielder Vincent Owino.

He scored against Nzoia Sugar, Sofapaka, and KCB. He has three assists in games against Bidco, Sofapaka – where he was named man of the match and a place in the team of the week, and Shabana.

Newton Ochieng focuses on return

Midfielder Newton Ochieng aka Toni plans to engage the right gears to get back on track after being put aside from league games due to an injury suffered against Shabana in matchday seven of the 2023/24 FKF Premier League in late October 2023.

Newton suffered the injury in the closing stages of the first half in Homa Bay Stadium and had to exit the pitch. That setback has kept him out of the Simba wa Nairobi squad for four league matches. He is now focused on a bounceback.

“My season so far hasn’t been good and hasn’t been bad either. Due to the injury I got, I feel I have been off the team as it has left me inactive,” he said

“But more is to come because I am recovering well. I have started training with the team which I’d say is a good start,”

“I am happy now and ready to join my teammates to help each other in gaining vital points in the upcoming league games,” added Toni

According to team physio Brain Otieno Odongo, Newton is ready to return to the pitch when given the nod.

“From my side, he is now fully fit. He’s back to full training and I have since handed him back to the technical bench for consideration of fielding him in the games to come.” added Brian

Till the injury setback in Homa Bay, Newton had featured in the starting six games of the season.

Julius Ombacho patiently waiting

Goalkeeper Julius Ombacho is still training his sights on his Kenyan Premier League debut.

Ombacho, signed in the offseason from third-tier side Launda Villa, admits to there being challenges after switching levels but is keen on putting the right shift to earn league games.

“I featured in Division One and now I am in City Stars. So far so good. Collectively, we are putting our best foot forward in the league,”

“As for me, it has not been easy though. I came from the lower leagues and getting here means there is lots of competition,”

“On a personal level, I am putting in the effort for consideration, to earn that debut top-flight game, and feature in many more league games.”

Ombacho has made the Simba wa Nairobi squad once this season, where he was an unused substitute in a game six match against Kenya Police.
