Makati makes it five

Attacking midfielder Rowland Makati improved his goal tally this season to five after aiding Nairobi Stima to a 2-1 win over AP Bomet at the Camp Toyoyo on Saturday 26 June 2021.

Makati, on a season-long loan to Stima from Nairobi City Stars – alongside defensive mid Ronney Kola – struck minutes to halftime to give the hosts a 1-0 lead at the breather.

AP Bomet leveled the game mid through the second half but later on Stima grabbed all points with the winning goal through Tevin Opondo.

Makati’s latest goal follows his winning one against Mt. Kenya at Camp Toyoyo. Stima won that duel 2-1.

“When you send a player on loan what you want to hear is that they are earning playtime. If they score and aid the team to a win, then that’s a very big plus,”

“We are happy at Makati’s progress as well as that of Kola who has been a regular in the Stima squad,” commented Samson Otieno, City Stars team coordinator

From the AP Bomet win, Stima is 17th with 26 points from 24 rounds of games.

City Stars licks Nzoia, sets record

A late 87th-minute goal by substitute Rodgers Okuse Okumu is all Nairobi City Stars needed to stop a fighting Nzoia Sugar 1-0 at Narok Stadium on Friday 25 June 2021 to move up a spot from sixth to fifth in the 17-team log.

The win set a new club record of five straight wins in the top flight bettering three other occasions where the team had registered four straight wins back in 2006, 2008, and 2012.

Within the first ten minutes, City Stars had two shots at goal by Peter Opiyo and skipper Anthony Muki Kimani. While the first went out, the second went straight to Nzoia keeper Humphrey Katasi.

Within the same span, Nzoia had two chances of their own but Felicien Okanda’s shot off a freekick by Elvis Ronnack went straight to City Stars keeper Steve Njunge, and one by Denis Wanjala, off the first corner of the game, flew just beyond the far post.

Within the next 14 minutes, it was more of Nzoia on City Stars but they wasted a freekick by Kevin Maliachi, saw a flicked header by veteran Philip Muchuma fly wide, and perhaps the best of all; Felicien firing over when within the penalty area after receiving a perfect cross.

The tide then changed towards the close of the first half where City Stars were guilty of wasting sumptuous crosses, a freekick and throw-in from left-back Bolton Omwenga who was facing his former employers, as well as two freekicks from good range by Muki.

Simba wa Nairobi had back-to-back corners just before the breather, but there was nothing to show for both.

Onto the next stanza, Nzoia made a double sub to add punch upfront; Daniel Wafula and speedster Gaetan Mosha coming on for James Kibande and skipper Peter Gin. Moments later City Stars responded by ushering in pocket rocket Okuse for Oliver Maloba.

18 minutes into the second half, Nzoia should have been 1-0 up but a ping pong ball in the City Stars area failed to get a connection

Inside four minutes after that near-miss, City Stars were on the other end but a shot off the box by Muki went wide.

A minute later, Okuse sneaked into the box to receive a defense splitting pass from Opiyo, rounded the keeper, and within yards of goal fired at goal only for the ball to rise above the crossbar.

Sub Wafula then had a long pile driver on 75 minutes but his direction was off, the ball sailing wide.

Nzoia were to then add Hillary Simiyu to the mix, in place of Muchuma, as City Stars brought on Erick Ombija and Ezekiel Odera for Muki and the most marked man Nicholas Kipkirui.

And with three minutes to time, the subs on the day proved the difference as Okuse pounced on an Odera layup, off a Kevin Okumu – Opiyo – Davis Agesa buildup, to score the lone goal of the game and hand City Stars all spoils on the road.

The game ended not too long after with stopper Wycliffe Otieno joining the party for an injured Opiyo.

With the latest triumph in Narok, City Stars confirmed a double this season over Nzoia, whom they beat 2-0 at the same venue in the season opener in November 2020.

While Okuse was the hero in Narok, Sven Yidah was picked as the Most Valuable Player for his midfield control.

Up next for City Stars is a home game against Wazito to be held in Ruaraka on Wednesday 30 June 2021 starting 1 pm.

Head to head: Nzoia United (H) vs Nairobi City Stars (A)

Narok Stadium will, for the second time in the 2020/21 premier league season, host a Nzoia United – Nairobi City Stars game, this time on Friday 25 June 2021 starting 3 pm.

On 29 Nov 2020, City Stars hosted Nzoia at their venue, in their first premier league match since the 2016 season, following their promotion back to the top flight.

Simba wa Nairobi won it 2-0 to register a winning start thanks to early goals by Anthony Kimani and Oliver Maloba within the first 20 minutes.

Nzoia were forced to hire Narok Stadium for this reverse game – 321 km away from their Sudi base – following a Government shutdown of their County, among other bordering ones, due to a spike in coronavirus numbers.

The November game was historic, as City Stars and Nzoia had never faced off in any competition. The upcoming tie will only be the second meet between the two sides.

Between then and now, there are slight changes to both setups for the Friday game; Peter Mwaura was the coach in charge of Nzoia during that first encounter but things have since changed and the man at the helm is former Kenya fullback Ibrahim Bura Shikanda.

Sanjin Alagic is still the man in charge for City Stars though in the upcoming tie his assistant John Amboko will step up to his role. Sanjin is currently on a short leave abroad and is expected to return at the weekend.

Heading to the game, Nzoia sits 14th in the 17-team log with 17 points while City Stars is sixth with 12 points on their Friday hosts.

Nzoia has lost three of its last four games while City Stars has collected maximum points from a similar number of games.

While Nzoia will be hoping to return to winning ways, to end a six-game winless streak, City Stars will be going for an unprecedented fifth straight win to scale upward on the log into the top five.

Same lot for Nzoia clash

For a third straight match, head coach Sanjin Alagic has retained the 20-man squad that took on Western Stima and Kakamega Homeboyz, this time for the upcoming game against Nzoia United on Friday 25 June 2021 at Narok Stadium starting 3 pm.

However, from the squad that faced Nzoia in the season opener at the same venue back in November 2020, there are four changes;

Teenagers Timothy Noor Ouma and Vincent Otieno Okoth, who earned their Premier League debuts back then, are missing, and in their places are fullbacks Kevin Okumu and Bolton Omwenga. The latter will be up against his former team.

The third change is that of keeper Elvis Ochoro who was the understudy to Stephen Njunge. His place has been taken up by Jacob Osano.

And the final one is striker Nicholas Kipkirui coming on for defender Edwin Buliba.

Nairobi City Stars, Masawa
Calvin Masawa in a past game for Nairobi City Stars against Vihiga Bullets in Feb 2020 at Camp Toyoyo

Skipper Masawa speaks

21 games into the 2020/21 Kenyan Premier League season, Nairobi City Stars has risen from a low 14th spot to sixth with 29 points, and within groping distance of the fifth spot.

The upscaling from double-digit has been aided by a string of four contiguous wins over Sofapaka (3-0), Kariobangi Sharks, and Western Stima (both ended 2-1) in the most immediate games.

But just what attributed the rise up?

According to overall team skipper Masawa – the longest-serving player having joined the club back in 2011 – the team had to refresh, after a scrutiny of the problem areas. And the results are now for all to see.

“We went back to the drawing board as players and the technical bench and asked ourselves what worked best for us when we had those good runs,” said Masawa

City Stars registered identical 2-0 wins over Nzoia United and Bandari, on either side of a 1-0 loss to KCB in the opening games, then registered two draws against Bidco United and Vihiga United, then against Ulinzi Stars and Posta Rangers, on either side of a loss to Wazito.

A string of three straight losses by Sofapaka, Kariobangi Sharks and Kakamega Homeboyz then followed.

The bad patch, a collective eight games with no win ended with a 2-1 win over Zoo FC, and it was followed up by further wins over Western Stima and Mathare United.

Then came a dry spell, narrow losses to AFC Leopards and Gor Mahia in between a draw with Tusker. That then ended with the four latest wins

“We had lost a bit of focus which is normal in football but after the meetings, we decided that it was high time we started collecting maximum points,”

“Before we were dropping points from winnable matches. We agreed it had to come to an end and here we are collecting some good wins.” added Masawa

Next up for Masawa and company is an away game against Nzoia United at the Narok Stadium on Fri 25 June 2021 from 3 pm.
