MD4: Nairobi City Stars 2 Kibera Black Stars 3

Simba wa Nairobi went down 3โ€“2 to Kibera Black Stars in a 2025/26 National Super League (NSL) matchday four encounter played at Ngong Vapor Grounds on Sunday, 26 October 2025.

Two headers from corners in the 11th and 56th minutes by Fidel Castro and Bockins Adeya, respectively, put Black Stars in control. In between, City Stars had pulled one back in the 33rd minute when attacking midfielder Abuyeka Kubasu nodded in a Stephen Bulugu freekick from the left, earned after Lawrence Luvanda was fouled, for a 1-1 draw at the break. The goal marked Abuyekaโ€™s first-ever league strike for the club.

Black Stars’ Jephiter Bundi then capitalized on a defensive lapse on the hour mark to stretch the game to 3-1 for the visitors.

On 71 minutes, Joshua Amunike grabbed a second for Simba wa Nairobi-his third goal in as many matches-to set up a tense finale that eventually ended 3โ€“2 in favor of Black Stars.

The Sunday fixture was the first meeting between the two sides at this level since 14 December 2019 at Camp Toyoyo, when Black Stars edged City Stars 1-0 courtesy of a Janyeel Otieno goal that ended City Starsโ€™ 23-match unbeaten NSL run.

With the defeat, City Stars drop from sixth to eighth place on eight points, while Black Stars climb to third on ten points in the 20-team standings.

Next up for City Stars is a midweek clash against Darajani Gogo at Ngong Vapor Grounds on Thursday, 30 October 2025, with kick-off set for 3 p.m.

After sitting out the first six games of the season due to a slight injury, left back Stephen Bulugu made his way to Nairobi City Stars lineup in matchday eight against Gor Mahia in Machakos on Monday, October 28, 2024.

The Tanzanian nationals entry to the lineup – his debut for City Stars – came with good tidings as Simba wa Nairobi went on to win their first game of the season after seeing of Champions Gor Mahia 2-1 after erasing a 1-0 half time deficit.

“I would like to thank almighty God, we were able to finish our game safely, we won (2-1). That was the turnaround that everyone needed, and put in a lot of work to achieve,” said Bukugu

“It was a big game and there was a lot of pressure, but I would like to congratulate the coach, he was able to encourage us and we went on to do the work he sent us to do,”

Bulugu had a full debut in the Gor Mahia game and went on to pick another full game in the following game against Shabana in Gusii that City Stars won 1-0.

    The back-to-back wins make Bulugu confident in the current Simba wa Nairobi outfit;

“We really have a good team to be proud of, I believe we will do well in the next set of games,” he added

Bulugu joined Simba wa Nairobi in the offseason from relegated Muhoroni Youth.

Stephen Bulugu: It’s only a matter of time

Left back Stephen Bulugu is staying focused on the patience lane as he waits to fully recover from a recent injury.

Bulugu, an offseason signing from Muhoroni Youth, has so far missed on making the squads in the opening three games against Bidco United, Mara Sugar, and AFC Leopards.

“A slight injury has kept me out from my debut but it’s only a matter of time and I will be ready to feature for the team,” said the Tanzania national

Beyond the wait, Bulugu is enjoying his time at Simba wa Nairobi since his arrival.

“In the short time I have been here, City Stars has already become my big family. Everyone has become a close friend. I feel well guided so far and I am happy to be part of the establishment,”

“Training has been good and I must thank the technical bench for the clear structure they deploy,” he added

Bulugu came in as a direct replacement for Dennis Wanjala who pursued other interests upon expiry of his tenure. He is one of three new faces signed besides centre back Brian Opinde, flyer Andre Kalama, and midfielder James Ssemambo.

The four were accompanied to City Stars by the returning defensive mid Sven Yidah who made his way back after two seasons out.

Bulugu will don jersey no. 22 this season.

Ouma, Opinde considered for Mara Sugar test

There will be two notable changes from the squad that opened the season against Bidco United last weekend when City Stars takes on Mara Sugar in matchday three on Saturday 21 Sept 2024 in Awendo starting at 3 p.m.

Head-to-head: Mara Sugar (H) vs Nairobi City Stars (A) vs: 2024-25 FKF-PL season

Two left backs Rogers Wasega who made a full debut against Bidco, and newcomer Stephen Bulugu are all out of the travelling squad and their places have been snapped up by new defender Brian Opinde and defensive midfielder Clifford Ouma.

Wasega recently earned a callup to the Kenya U20 team preparing for CECAFA duty in a fortnight and has been given time off to prepare for camp from Sunday.

A slight injury has kept Bulugu out therefore giving a chance to Ouma to make the trip.

Save for the two changes, the other 18 players all maintained their places in the squad.
