Head-to-head: Nairobi City Stars (H) vs Nzoia Sugar (A): 2022/23 FKF Premier League season

For just the third time in the Kenyan Premier League, Nairobi City Stars will host Nzoia Sugar, this time in a 32nd-round tie on Saturday 3 June 2023 in Kasarani Annex starting at 3.15 pm.

The two have never faced off in Kasarani Annex which becomes the third venue in as many matches.

During the first-ever meeting between the two in any competition, on 29 November 2020, in the opening game of the 2020/21 season, Simba wa Nairobi hosted Nzoia Sugar in Narok and won 2-0.

In the next game, an eighth-round clash in the 2021/22 season played on 8 December 2021, City Stars hosted Nzoia in Ruaraka, a game that ended 0-0.

City Stars heads to the game on the high of a 2-1 win over AFC Leopards in the last game played in Nyayo Stadium on Monday while title-chasing Nzoia Sugar is smarting from a 1-0 home loss to bogey team Kariobangi Sharks.

Even then, tablewise, City Stars sits 15th on the 18-team log with 33 points, 27 points behind the third-placed Nzoia Sugar.

Coaching-wise, Simba wa Nairobi’s Nicholas Muyoti will be coming up against his counterpart Salim Babu who masterminded a 1-0 win in Sudi Stadium during the first leg.

A Bonface Kweyu penalty in the tail end of the first half is all that home team Nzoia Sugar needed to see off Nairobi City Stars in Sudi Stadium on Saturday 17 December 2022 during a match day five FKF Premier League tie.

The penalty was awarded after Simba wa Nairobi stopper Kenedy Vidic Onyango was adjudged to have tagged Joseph Mwangi in the box. Amid wild protestations from the visitors, Kweyu eventually stepped up to settle the game as Nzoia posted their first-ever home win over City Stars.

From the results, City Stars remains 15th with a single point as Nzoia moved to the ten points after five rounds of play.

Next up for City Stars is a home game against Kariobangi Sharks in Ruaraka on Wednesday 21 December 2022 starting 3 pm.

For only the third time, Nzoia Sugar will host Nairobi City Stars, this time in a fifth round 2022-23 FKF Premier League match on Saturday 17 December 2022 in Sudi Stadium starting 3 pm.

It will be the second visit for Simba wa Nairobi to Sudi this year following up on a February encounter during a reverse fixture in the 2021-22 season.

That encounter ended 1-1 after a late Joseph Mwangi goal for Nzoia canceled out Anthony Muki Kimani’s first-half goal.

In the upcoming fixture, Nzoia will be seeking a first win over City Stars considering their home game against Simba wa Nairobi – in Narok in mid-2021 – ended in a 0-1 defeat.

The upcoming game will see, once again, coach Salim Babu of Nzoia come up against his City Stars counterpart Nicholas Muyoti.

Into the game, Nzoia carries a massive 1-2 away win over KCB from the last set of games while City Stars tags along with a 0-0 draw against Posta Rangers.

Nzoia sits third in the standings with seven points, six ahead of City Stars who are currently placed 15th.

Home team Nzoia Sugar rallied to score an 83rd-minute goal by Joseph Mwangi to cancel out Anthony Muki Kimani’s opener at the half-hour mark in a matchday 18 FKF Premier League tie played on Sunday 13 February 2022 in Sudi Stadium, Nzoia.

Muki, returning to the squad after missing the last assignment against Kariobangi Sharks was at the right place to ram home a rebound from keeper Humphrey Katasi who failed to contain a Sven Yidah shot after he received a perfect ball in the box from Ezekiel Odera.

It was Muki’s fifth goal of the season that sees him tie Ezekiel Odera atop the Simba wa Nairobi score-chart.

Inside the last ten minutes, just when Simba wa Nairobi were planning to lock out the game, Mwangi received a long pass from newly recruited stopper Hamisi Salim to head home from close range for Nzoia to grab a share of the spoils.

Mwangi’s goal, the first-ever for Nzoia Sugar against City Stars in the premier league, came off one of the several raids initiated by the home side especially in the second half of the game.

Though denied all points in the first-ever visit to Sudi Stadium by the determined hosts, City Stars moved a spot up from third to second with 32 as Nzoia Sugar remained in 16th spot with an improved 12 points.
