Andrew Kisilu slammed home a rebound eleven minutes into the second half for Simba wa Nairobi to take the lead. But the hosts rallied to level matters eleven minutes later through substitute Samuel Ndungu who fired from within the box.

Kisilu’s goal was his second in the top flight, and the opening goal for City Stars this term.

Brian Mzee, on his first premier league start, and full 90 minutes in the top flight, was picked out as the man of the match.

With a share of the spoils in the only Sunday game, both teams remain in mid-table.

    Andrew Kisilu appreciates the support

As the 2022-23 FKF Premier League gets to its business end, forward Andrew Kisilu has admitted there have been challenges, but there too have been great openings.

Kisilu, a signing from second-tier side Dadora Love (now Kajiado FC), had a slow start but has since become a mainstay featuring in all matchday squads since mid-December 2022.

“So far the journey has been nothing short of challenges as well as breakthroughs,” said Andrew

“The support from fellow teammates and the Coaches has gone a long way,”

“I am looking forward to contributing more goals and assists for the team in the remaining matches.” added the diminutive left-footer

Kisilu made his debut as a second-half substitute against Posta Rangers on 11 December 2022 in Thika Stadium.

He scored his maiden top-flight goal – that handed City Stars its first season win in mid-January 2023 in Kasarani Stadium against Sofapaka on matchday nine.

Thus far, Kisilu has featured in 25 of 29 games in his debut premier league season and has clocked 1,095 minutes. Of the 25 games, Kisilu has earned 13 starts, and two full games.

Other than his winning goal against Sofapaka, Kisilu has registered two assists.

  • Top flight debut for Omachi

    Top flight debut for Omachi

Forward Pius Omachi became the ninth Nairobi City Stars player to earn a Kenyan Premier league debut this season after coming on for Andrew Kisilu against Gor Mahia on Saturday 4 February in Kasarani during a match day 14 tie.

Omachi was part of a triple sub in the 72nd minute and was accompanied to the pitch by Vincent Otieno and Elvis Noor who rested Ezekiel Odera and Peter Opiyo, respectively.

Omachi’s entry came after he had been on the bench in the last three league games against Mathare United, Wazito, and Bandari.

He became the eighth of nine new season recruits to step up to the top flight, and the 25th of 26 players registered for the season to feature in the league.

“The debut was not an easy one for me. I learned quite a lot in the few minutes that I earned,”

“I’ll be honest, I had stage freight. But know that I got a taste of the environment, I will be better in upcoming games,”

“I am now looking forward to clocking many more premier league minutes as we go along to help me fully adapt to the competitive platform.” said Omachi

Omachi, forced out of the entire preseason, and the first ten games due to injury, follows in the footsteps of newcomers Newton Ochieng, Kelvin Etemesi, and forward Daniel Odhiambo who all made their maiden topflight appearances in the season-opener against Bidco United.

Midfielder Ronney Kola, unused the whole of last season due to injury, also made his top-flight debut, as well as striker Samuel Kapen, made his Simba wa Nairobi bow the same day.

Defensive midfielder Clifford Ouma followed in the second game against Tusker and was joined by Kisilu in game four against Posta Rangers. Stopper Elly Kessy Osotsi then got his chance in game seven against AFC Leopards.

With Omachi up in the ranks of premier league players, stopper Timothy Muganda, injured in pre-season, is the only one yet to be fielded by City Stars this season.

Kisilu excited by debut topflight goal

Substitute Andrew Kisilu scored his maiden Kenyan Premier League goal on Saturday 14 January 2023 during a match day nine tie in Kasarani to steer Nairobi City Stars to a 2-1 win over Sofapaka.

He came on for Mohammed Bajaber in the 69th minute when the game was tied 1-1 and nine minutes later he scored what turned out to be the winning goal.

Kisilu slammed home an effort by Samuel Kapen that had initially been blocked by the Sofapaka keeper Kevin Omondi to guide Simba wa Nairobi to their first win of the season after eight previous unsuccessful attempts.

He talked up the goal that has now made him hungry for more.

“I am happy to have opened my account with a goal that helped the team get all three points,”

“I thank the coaches for their support as well as my amazing teammates for making it possible to get the goal,”

“I am now looking forward to contributing more goals to the team going forward.” added the former Dandora Love forward

Kisilu made his topflight debut in matchday four against Posta Rangers in Thika in mid-December 2022, and has gone on to feature in all games thereafter.

Muyoti, Muki speak out after first season win

Head coach Nicholas Muyoti, and field skipper Anthony Muki Kimani have commented on the first season win over Sofapaka in Kasarani on Saturday 14 January 2023.

In the game, Sofapaka went up first with a penalty from Rody Manga in the 17th minute before Ezekiel Odera canceled out with a penalty for City Stars four minutes later.

Substitute Andrew Kisilu then delivered the killer punch in the 78th minute that turned out to be the winner or Simba wa Nairobi to end an eight-game winless streak this season, and 13-game winless run from last season, to grab the first full points of the season.

“It’s been a long wait, finally we get three points. It was a tough match against Sofapaka who are a very good side. They beat us twice last season,” said Muyoti

“Team effort carried the day; players, technical staff, management, and fans. Without believing and never giving up, we wouldn’t have done it. I say thank you.” added the coach

    His sentiments were echoed by Muki who said;

“It was a great win considering that we had gone eight matches without one. It’s a great motivation to the whole team that anything is possible,”

“Great team effort and character brought us three important points. We need to keep on pushing,”

Up next for City Stars is a home game against KCB in Kasarani Annex on Wednesday 18th Jan starting 3.15 pm.

“We need to build on this performance, our confidence is back, it will be tough against Kcb but am sure we will get a positive result,” said Muyoti

Ahead of the game, City Stars sits 16th in the 18-team log with five points.
