Ronney Kola recounts Gor game in Nyayo

Defensive mid-Ronney Kola is excited about the role he played as Nairobi City Stars stopped Gor Mahia 3-1 in a friendly at Nyayo Stadium on Sunday 13 November 2022.

In the game, Kola, a natural defensive midfielder, was deployed as a stopper and played to the left of seasoned Kenedy Onyango.

In spite of the unfamiliar role, Kola was almost faultless in his new role.

According to statistics provided by Tisini, a composed Kola, other than doing a center-backs role, strung 43 (of 46) complete passes that equate to 93% success rate as he built play from the back.

“He did very well. His composure and confidence was top notch,” said head coach Nicholas Muyoti

“Generally, he was very impressive and fitted very well as a centre-back. He however needs to work on his speed and insight,” pointed Muyoti

Kola, a former Kenya School of Government player, is hoping for more games to showcase his capabilities.

“It was my first tough game as a center back, my first game at Nyayo, and the first ever against Gor Mahia,”

“It was a very good game but at first I was very nervous. Then slowly I settled into the game since I believe in myself and I know my capabilities,”

“I am happy that I managed the task at hand on the day. I pray for an injury-free season as I hope to earn many games.” added Kola

Due to injury, Kola is the only City Stars player that failed to feature in any premier league game last season. He has now fully recovered and has so far featured in 11 of 18 friendly games.

Andrew Kisilu joins from Dandora Love

Flyer Andrew Kisilu Ngati has joined Nairobi City Stars from second-tier side Dandora Love for the upcoming season.

Kisilu, a left winger, adds firepower to Simba wa Nairobi’s frontline which was left open following a number of departures at the close of last season.

“Joining City Stars is a step up for me, and a dream come true, considering where I was playing last season,”

“It is humbling to join Nairobi City Stars and work with some of the best coaches and players in the country. I am looking forward to aiding the team to attain its targets going forward,” added Kisilu

Kisilu has been part of the Simba wa Nairobi setup since late August 2022 and went on to feature in 5 of 18 friendlies scoring three times and providing one assist.

Kisilu will don jersey no. 11 which was vacated by Davis Agesa. He is the fourth player to be unveiled player after Samuel Kapen, Clifford Ouma, and Newton Ochieng.

Friendly Fire: Gor Mahia 1 City Stars 3

Nairobi City Stars rallied from a goal down to see off host Gor Mahia 3-1 in their 18th and the final pre-season match played at Nyayo National Stadium on Sunday 13 November 2022.

Gor Mahia led 1-0 at halftime from a Lloyd Kavuchi goal in the 15th minute when City Stars failed to clear a free kick.

City Stars turned the game around when Peter Opiyo buried a penalty earned after substitute Vincent Jamaica‘Otieno’s fierce shot was handled in the box.

Six minutes later, Jamaica sent City Stars ahead with a clever goal beating Gor keeper Caleb Omondi at the far post with a dinking shot.

With four minutes left, a low assist into the box by Samuel Kapen was tapped in by another substitute Newton Toni Ochieng for the game to end 3-1.

The game followed on a Tuesday game against Koteen FC in Ngong Vapor that ended 0-0.

Nairobi City Stars was held to a 0-0 draw by visiting Koteen FC during a pre-season friendly played at Ngong Vapor on Tuesday 8 November 2022.

The game followed another played at the same venue the previous Tuesday against K-Sport that ended 1-1.

Muki: League delay is causing anxiety

When will the League (2022-23) kick-off? This is a question Nairobi City Stars field skipper Anthony Muki Kimani posed to the team honchos and the response he received was ‘hopefully soon’.

According to Muki, an unknown kickoff to the league is mentally destabilizing players across different leagues.

“We have been in training for weeks now and all players are now in good shape. Friendly games have blended us with the new players and I can say almost all clubs have been ready for the long overdue kickoff,”

“Other than kickstarting the gelling process with newcomers, pre-season builds up through early days then climaxes after six to eight weeks. Normally, it’s at that point that leagues kick off with all teams at an optimal level,”

“But now we face a situation where some teams have trained for over three months which has led to immense anxiety,”

“Each time you play a friendly game it’s an anticipation of something bigger, a league game, which are unsure of. We hope that sooner than later wait will come to pass,” added Muki

The 2022/23 FKF Premier League was to kick off in the month of September but after several postponements, it was called off indefinitely. The 2021/22 season concluded on 12 June 2022.
