Premier League debutant Robinson Asenwa was included in the Team Of The Week (TOTW) at the close of matchday 17 which came to a close to the first leg on Sunday 7 January 2024.

Asenwa, featuring in just his 12th topflight game on Saturday 6 January against FC Talanta, made it to the best eleven FKF premier league team for the first time this season.

Asenwa joins flyer Samuel Kapen who is making it to the best eleven for the fifth time after making it to the same list at the end of matchdays 10, 13, and 15 against AFC Leopards, Ulinzi Stars, and FC Talanta, in that order.

“It is very exciting to be placed with the best across the weekend. It gives me more reason to work even better to become a better player and contribute positively to the team,” said Asenwa

During the FC Talanta game, Asenwa and Kapen scored a goal each. Kapen had two assists and was named the man of the match.

Separately, Kapen was nominated in a short list of four for the Fan’s Player of the Week award.

Besides entry of the pair to MD17 TOTW, Nairobi City Stars and tactician Nicholas Muyoti were nominated for the team of the week, and coach of the week, respectively.

Elvis Noor: Our season has stabilized

Defensive midfielder Elvis Noor Ojiambo appreciates Nairobi City Stars’ turnaround by the end of the 2023-24 FKF Premier League first-leg.

The mid-bully also acknowledges, compared to last season, that the team has made the right strides, results-wise.

“Our season has now stabilized after a shaky start. Last season we had to endure and withstand lots of challenges and we have been alive to that fact,”

“That did not deter us, but it became our motivator and a driving force for the players,”

“I am happy to contribute to the rise of the team, and on a personal level, I wish to add goals and assists to further push Simba wa Nairobi forward,” he added

Elvis, in his fifth season with Simba wa Nairobi, has so far featured in 78 Premier League games – all at City Stars since the 2020-21 FKF Premier League season and has so far featured in 14 of the 17 league games in the current season clocking 599 minutes.

Record win against Talanta dedicated to Kelvin Etemesi

Nairobi City Stars players have dedicated a record-breaking 3-0 win over FC Talanta registered during a matchday 17 tie in Ruaraka on Saturday 6 January 2024 to ailing forward Kelvin Etemesi.

Etemesi became sick during the December holidays and is yet to resume training this year.

According to team leader and skipper Calvin Masawa, the Saturday win, a record sixth on the trot for Simba wa Nairobi in 16 premier league seasons, goes to Etemesi.

“We dedicate the win to our jersey 20 Kelvin Etemesi who is currently sick. Our thoughts and prayers are with him,”

“As he recuperates, we want him to know he is part of us at Simba wa Nairobi, and when he is not with us we will share our earned achievements with him. We wish him a quick recovery.” said Masawa

During the game, a first-half goal by Mohammed Bajaber, and two others in the second-half by Robinson Asenwa and Samuel Kapen handed Simba wa Nairobi the first-ever home win over their stubborn foes in three attempts.

Simba wa Nairobi first registered five contiguous wins in the 2020/21 Premier League season between matchday 18 and 22.

The team matched that streak in December 2023 after seeing off Kakamega Homeboyz 1-0 in matchday 16, in what was the year-ender.

That was broken in the year-opener on Saturday in Ruaraka with the convincing 3-0 win over FC Talanta.

Goals by Mohammed Bajaber, Robinson Asenwa, and Samuel Kapen handed home team Nairobi City Stars a 3-0 dispatch of FC Talanta during a matchday 17 tie in Ruaraka on Saturday 6 January 2024.

Kapen teed up Mohammed for the first on 37 minutes, and Asenwa dummied over confusing the defense, for the first goal from close range.

Mohammed returned the favor for Kapen who then laid it for Asenwa to finish off the second on 58 minutes. Kapen then finished it off with a great counterattack move beating a center back before placing the ball under the arms of the keeper for the third on 77 minutes. He was later named the MVP.

With the win, the first home win over FC Talanta in three attempts, Simba wa Nairobi registered a new record of winning six games on the trot to move to the 30-point mark and second on the 18-team log.

Next up for Nairobi City Stars is a home game against Posta Rangers in Ruaraka on Sunday 14 January 2024 starting at 3 p.m.
