Kagunzi takes over as team manager

Former Nairobi City Stars goalkeeper Ronny Kagunzi is back at the club as the team manager taking over from Noah Abich who held the position on an interim basis following the demise of Neville Pudo in December 2020.

Kagunzi left at the close of the 2019/20 National Super League (NSL) season but is now back to take up a management role.

“Kagunzi has been handed the team manager’s role on a full-time basis taking over from Abich who held the position on an interim basis,” said club CEO Patrick Korir

“Abich recently completed his CAF ‘C’ License Diploma in Kisumu and the changes will allow him to fully concentrate on coaching,”

“We take this opportunity to thank Abich for plugging in to hold forte as an assistant coach and at the same time welcome Kagunzi on board as he starts his journey in management.” added Korir

Till his official appointment, Kagunzi had been overseeing Abich’s function while he attended (alongside keeper trainer Zachary Onyango) the month-long CAF ‘Ç’ course from mid-September.

Kagunzi had three different stints with City Stars after first arriving from Gor Mahia in 2012 for two seasons. He then took a detour to Nakuru AllStars and then Sony Sugar in 2014 but was back at the club for another two seasons in 2015 and 2016 before leaving for Ushuru.

He was back at City Stars again for the third time in 2018 and went on to conclude four straight seasons till the end of the 2019/20 season helping the club to promotion back to the Kenyan Premier League.

Friendly fire: City Stars 1 Dagoretti Santos 0

A Herit Mungai goal, off a delivery from Calvin Masawa, was the difference when Nairobi City Stars took on Dagoretti Santos in a friendly game at Ligi Ndogo on the morning of Wednesday 27 October 2021.

Coach Nicholas Muyoti used the friendly to largely hand match fitness to players who are coming through injuries, and/or have not featured in competitive league games so far into the new FKF Premier League season.

It was the second time this year that City Stars was hosting Dagoretti Santos in a friendly match.

The two last faced off in May at the Public Service Club (PSC). City Stars won that game 2-0 with goals from Oliver Maloba and Davis Agesa.

Kipkirui, Ouma in TOTW 4

Nairobi City Stars forwards Nicholas Kipkirui and Timothy Noor Ouma were named to the Team of The Week (TOTW) at the close of FKF Premier League 4 matches on Sunday 24 October 2021.

While it was the first show for Kipkirui, named MVP after scoring once and setting up Erick Ombija in City Stars 2-0 win over Bidco United, it was a second straight appearance for Ouma in the TOTW.

Ouma – named MVP in the game against Wazito – set up Kipkirui for his opener with a freekick.

Ouma as well as stopper Kenedy Vidic Onyango ended up in the Week 3 team of the week.

In the second game of the season against Kenya Police, in which City Stars won 2-0, Onyango made the week 2 dream team alongside forward Davis Agesa who was named the game MVP.

Timothy Ouma takes early lead

Three goals, one apiece in the three straight starting games of the season against Sofapaka, Kenya Police, and Wazito, places teenage sensation Timothy Noor Ouma aka Babu atop of the 2021/22 scorer’s charts.

The Chapa Dimba Rift Valley MVP in 2020 leads a pack of four other players who are on two goals each.

In the fourth game of the season against Bidco United, Babu was restricted from making it four-in-four but came out with an assist for Nicholas Kipkirui who scored the opening goal. City Stars went on to win the game 2-0.

The blistering start to the season that now sees Babu in the scorers’ limelight, has so far earned him two back-to-back Player of the Week nominations after the Wazito – a game where he was named MVP – and Bidco wins.

Ombija excited at being the super sub

Forward Erick Jibaba Ombija is a happy lad having come off the bench to turn around the last two games within four days for Nairobi City Stars leading to 3-1 and 2-0 wins over Wazito and Bidco United, respectively.

Ombija, signed at the start of last season from Coast Stima where he was on loan from Gor Mahia, came off the bench in the last two games for Ezekiel Odera at the time the games were scoreless.

Nine minutes after coming on in the Wazito game, City Stars went up 1-0 then Ombija provided two assists for Timothy Ouma and his former Coast Stars teammate Rodgers Okumu leading Simba wa Nairobi to the 3-1 win.

Against Bidco, barely two minutes after coming off the bench, Ombija got to the end of a cross from Nicholas Kipkirui – the scorer of the first goal – to tap in at the near post to double the scores.

“I am grateful that I am directly contributing to the teams’ wins,”

“I am looking forward to scoring more goals and to providing more assists,” added Ombija

The aggressive super sub will be looking to carry his impact to the upcoming games, the most immediate being away to Posta Rangers on Saturday 30 October 2021.
